Your favourite band is probably practicing beer pong right now

If you’re one of the very few people in the world right now that has plans on Friday night, cancel them, because there’s something much more interesting going on that needs your attention. The Isolation Pong Championship for our scene has been announced, and in Round 1, we’ll see Aussie pop punk darlings Yours Truly go head to head with metalcore’s Thornhill at 7pm AEDT on May 8th.

With artists entering the tournament from Australia, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, it’s basically a dream festival lineup bar the live musical performances. Sixteen artists will aggressively compete for the title live on Instagram, including Bearings, The Faim, I The Mighty, Trash Boat, Between You & Me, Yours Truly, Eat Your Heart Out, Thornhill, Redhook, Void Of Vision, Tigress, Stepson, Young Culture, We Were Sharks, Ashland and Boys Of Fall.

If bantering contestants aren’t your thing, a timely reminder that these competitors are also musicians. First cabs off the rank, Yours Truly, dropped their new single ‘Composure’ a few weeks back, with frontwoman Mikaila Delgado explaining its inception coming “at a time when I really needed to reclaim my self worth after losing so much of it, I was over being miserable waiting for acceptance.” Meanwhile, enemy team Thornhill released their debut album The Dark Pool to great acclaim.

The isolation beer pong competition isn’t the first idea born to quell the lockdown blues. We’ve seen modern entrepreneurs Northlane start a wine range, Knocked Loose’s drummer create a flannel-themed candle, Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie launch a rarities store, Thursday convert merch into personal protective equipment and Nathaniel Shannon kickstart an auction to support tour crews in hardship. No doubt great music is also being penned in these hard times – and we’ll hopefully finally be able to see our faves play that music live as lockdown restrictions begin to ease.
