A Band's Best Friend

A Band’s Best Friend: Emma Mather of A Swift Farewell and her cockatoo Olivia

Sure, musicians are cool – they make great art, and they’re usually pretty dope people off-stage too. But you know who’s way cooler than any musician? The pet of any musician.

It’s a medical fact that scene pets are the leading source of nature’s serotonin reserves. Enter: A Band’s Best Friend, one of the all-time greatest columns from the olden days of BLUNT (back when we were in print – remember magazines!?), groomed and re-trained for the modern day. This time around, we’ve been given the privilege to meet Olivia, the right-hand-woman of A Swift Farewell frontwoman Emma Mather.

What’s your best friend’s name?
Olivia.

And what do you actually call them?
Livvy, Libby, Chicken, Fucking Moron, Piece Of Shit Bird.

What animal is your best friend?
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo.

How did you and your best friend meet?
At work. I’m a zookeeper and she was a donation to the park I worked at. I took care of her and then took her home, as there wasn’t enough room at the park for her – she doesn’t play well with others.

How would you best describe your best friend’s character?
Loving, loyal and really sweet… To me. To everyone else she’s a nightmare and she will hunt you down if you get between her and I. Nah, she’s okay with females when you let her warm up to you, but for males she’s really not a fan. Not great for the love life.

Tell us some of the more trying times in your friendship with your best friend?
She likes to destroy everything including chords, walls, carpet and my mum’s slippers. She will chase mum around the house for those bad boys. Thank god she can’t fly.

But what keeps the friendship going strong?
She will literally allow me to do anything with her. She cuddles in and falls asleep with me, and we sit in the sun together. She fulfils my need for complete adoration and devotion!

What’s your favourite memory with your best friend?
Probably the day I brought her home. She’s quite old and has quite a few serious health conditions, so to know she’s with me and can live out her life as happy, healthy and loved as possible just makes me so happy.

Where can we catch the adventures of you and your best friend?
I’ve been asked many times to get her her own Instagram, but for now most of my own stories are of her, so follow @emmalouisemather for regular updates, weird behaviour, and tantrums when she’s not allowed under or in the oven. She may also be making a cameo appearance in the music video for our single ‘Sunburn’.
