If the idea of disrobing in a tattoo studio full of humans makes your skin crawl, you aren’t alone. All too often we’re hit with revolting stories emerging from various studios throughout the world of sleaze and abuse; whether it be artists abusing customers by pushing them to undress or position themselves in a way that’s exploitative, or customers hassling artists, thinking a tattoo session is the best time to ask for their number.
Fortunately, as society makes moves to pivot into a more equitable arrangement, artists such as Em Reid have appeared, who have created spaces that are safe for the vulnerable to be tattooed sans judgement.
Together with a crew of like minded artists, Em Reid established the formidable Blanc Space tattoo studio in Ulladulla, New South Wales which was built around a philosophy of calmness, peace and expression. Understanding that the physical tattoo is only a part of the entire tattoo process, Em and the team at Blanc Space have created a long-overdue solution to unfortunately regressive prevailing wisdoms that once dominated the tattoo space.
It’s not just her desire to create such a space that has Em’s books filled, but her skills as a fine line black work artist. So delicate they’re almost fragile, Em’s pieces are a labour of love brought to life via painstaking attention to detail and an uncanny ability to see between the lines of an image.
One of the most respected artists in the game, Em was kind enough to shoot the breeze with Louie Tattooie for the latest episode of The Blunt Mag Tattoo Podcast, talking through her career, her motivations with plenty of tips for artists and customers alike.
