It’s been a big week for fans of iconic video game IP.
First we had the Crash Bandicoot 4 announcement, then we were blessed with further details on the remastered Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 & 2. Now there’s something to excite the true connoisseurs of late 90s / early 2000s gaming with the beloved racing staple, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, officially being released on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
Informed by the weird and wonderful world of Podracing, deployed by Lucas Arts to add some iron to the otherwise anaemic Phantom Menace, was originally released in 1999 and became an important gaming diet for just about everyone with a Nintendo 64. The multiplayer capabilities, plethora of tracks and playable racers straight from the film, Racer had as much potential for good family fun as it did for severe sibling rivalry.
Just like back then, you will once again be able to play as Anakin Skywalker, Sebulba, Ratts Tyerell and other loveable peripheral canon characters from the Boonta Eva finale and race at inhuman speeds through Tatooine, Baroonda, Malastare and beyond, with plenty of short cuts and hidden routes should you decide to flex such things.
News that the iconic title would be making the jump to current-gen platforms first broke earlier in the year, but much like everything else announced at the start of 2020, it was soon put on the back burner on account of all things COVID-19.
It’s safe to say that just as we grit our teeth to enter the world again, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer has given us all the reason we need to once again retreat to the couch, and call on our pit droids to get our customisation on.
Once again, the game will support offline multiplayer and is sitting pretty on the PlayStation store for $22.95 and $14.99 on Nintendo eStore.
