Review: Architects – All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us

All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us

4 Score

Architects belong to a very small handful of metalcore bands that are respected rather than scoffed at. Part of what cemented that reputation was their 2014 masterpiece Lost Forever//Lost Together, which was always going to be a hard act to follow. Having said that, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us does a bloody excellent job of it.

One of the first things you’ll notice about this record is that vocalist Sam Carter has never sounded this refined. From soft, poignant deliveries to full-blown, unclean ferocity, his polished skill set has allowed these UK core-legends to construct an outpouring more nuanced than ever before. In the same way that Carter’s projections have developed, the rest of the band’s instrumentals have also stepped up. Despite retaining their metallic bases, fresh and techy soundscapes breathe oxygen into this release, rather than making it sound like a carbon copy of their last success. If you’re seeking a reference point, reroute yourself to 8-minute epic “Memento Mori”.

While it is certain that the album is musically strong, what has made Architects so important is their message. That importance doesn’t just extend to our scene; it extends to their place in the world. The Brighton crew is providing us with literal wake-up calls about subjects that matter: corporate greed, personal integrity, faith or lack thereof. And people are listening. If you play this LP the whole way through and don’t find yourself questioning the state of the world afterwards, you’re either gravely separated from reality or a possible sociopath. When you do pause to think about what you’re doing to change this Earth long after you exit your iTunes library, you’ll realise that what they’re saying transcends your playback and justifies why they’re paid more respect than your ex’s cousin’s start-up band that’s mad at girls. All our gods may have abandoned us, but Architects never will.

All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us is out May 27 via UNFD.
