Nintendo Are Re-Releasing The NES As A Cute Lil’ Mini Console

The year is 1996 2016, and Nintendo‘s huge summer hit iiiiiiisss… The NES?

Okay, so this isn’t the industry-changing Nintendo NX that we’re supposed to hear about sometime this year, but we have to admit, this midgetised spin on a retro classic is pretty damn adorable, and we’ll take eight.

Some 30+ years after the Nintendo Entertainment System brought us (okay, not us, but our parents at least) the revolutionary joys of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend Of Zelda, we’ll be getting our 8-bit on once again with the very-awkwardly-titled Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System. The micro-console will hit Australian shelves on November 10th with a decent $99 price tag, and comes pre-installed with 30 of the NES’ most timeless classics.

The palm-sized console comes with a replica of the OG NES controller, with additional controllers available for around $20 a pop. They’re equipped with the same tech found in the Wii remote, so if you’ve got a Wii (or Wii U) loaded up with Virtual Console titles and want to get even more retro without shelling out for a whole new system, you can use the new (well…) controller and Wiimote interchangeably.

All of the major first party titles (and a few choice third party-ers) will be available on the NES 2.0, but unfortunately, as the console can’t connect to the internet, fans won’t be able to expand their library past the games already installed. There’s also no cartridge slots, so forget about dusting off your dad’s old collection.

Apart from how goddamn cute this lil’ baby is, one thing that stands out in particular is the title – with “Nintendo Entertainent System” only appearing as a subtitle, could we potentially see more Nintendo Classic Mini consoles on the horizon? We, for one, would most definitely sell our souls for an itty bitty Nintendo 64. Make it happen, guys!
