Justin Bieber Channels Inner Kurt Cobain; Internet Rages As Expected

The year is 2016, and defying everything we stood for just a couple of years ago, it’s no longer a crime to admit you enjoy the occasional bit of Justin Bieber. Let’s be honest, his new LP Purpose actually has a couple of okay tracks on it, and the man himself isn’t a very hateable little shit anymore – it’s win win! Or… Is it?

As reported by Alternative Nation, the Biebs debuted his Purpose World Tour earlier this week in Seattle – which many will note as the breeding grounds for seminal grunge icons Nirvana – where he paid an unspoken, but very, very obvious stylistic tribute to the Kurt Cobain-fronted group. Throughout the show, he donned two flannel shirts, ripped jeans, scrappy blonde hair (as per the ’90s trend), and, because apparently that wasn’t cringe enough already, a T-shirt emblazoned with Cobain’s face.

The icing on the cake comes in the fact that Bieber played a portion of the show acoustically, sitting on vintage furniture as dim red light flooded the venue – Nirvana’s famed 1993 MTV Unplugged performance springs to mind.

Twitter responded as disgustedly as expected, blowing up with comments both witty (“There’s more than one photo of Justin Bieber in Kurt Cobain cosplay so it’s not from The Onion.”) and of the “omg no why” variety.

Bieber’s stylist, Karla Welch, was quick to jump to his defence – likely because the complaints are technically aimed directly at her – stating: “Of course he’s a fan of Nirvana. I think it’s so funny that all these people are up in arms. I’m sure Kurt Cobain would be like – I mean I can’t speak for him, obviously – but I don’t think he was so snotty or that he would diss anyone who appreciated his music. I think he understood that that is like the antithesis of music appreciation.

“It’s so funny. But you know, fans are fans!” she said. “Whatever you want to say about being pop, but I don’t think Kurt Cobain gave two fucks, and I don’t think Justin Bieber does either. You know what I mean?”

Jaden Smith – a longtime friend of Bieber’s and acclaimed source of “philosophical” LOLS – also weighed in, further proving why Jaden Smith should never weigh in on anything, ever:
