Albo Dedicated an Aussie Pub Classic to Dutton on Live Radio And Yes, You Know the Line

Just when you thought Australian politics couldn’t get any more weird, re-elected Prime Minister Anthony Albanese decided to throw down a pub rock gauntlet on live radio.

Dropping in for a last-minute chat with Nova’s Jase & Lauren ahead of the now done-and-dusted federal election, the PM was asked to choose a Friday morning “banger” to crank the city into weekend mode.

“We’re going to give you a great honour this morning every Friday on the show…” Jase told Albanese. “We like to play an old school banger after eight o’clock, a song that just you know, brings this city vibe to a high for the weekend… We call it our ‘lights on, sing along’.  What would your song choice be for the banger today?”

Albo picked The Angels’ 1976 classic Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again – a track that’s less about its original lyrics these days, and more about the legendary Aussie crowd response.

“There’s no better singalong than ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again,’” Albo said with a smirk. “And almost every one of your listeners just got the joke.”

For the uninitiated, the punchline’s not in the title, but in the tradition. The moment that chorus kicks in, Aussie crowds have for decades shouted back: “No way, get fucked, fuck off!” And Albanese? He didn’t even try to hide the target. “It’s obvious who it’s dedicated to,” he added, taking an unsubtle jab at Liberal leader Peter Dutton.

Albo is no stranger to the Aussie music scene, having shown off his musical clout as a DJ and fan of homegrown artists like The Angels. Clearly he felt pretty confident in the election results given his cheeky jab at Dutton – and based on the results coming out of the vote count, it seems like he was right to.
