3 Doors Down vocalist Brad Arnold has shared that he’s been diagnosed with stage 4 clear cell renal cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer that has spread to his lungs.
The announcement came via a video message posted to the band’s social media, where Arnold spoke directly to fans with honesty and calm.
“I’d been sick a couple of weeks ago and then went to the hospital and got checked out,” he said. “I had actually got the diagnosis that I had clear cell renal carcinoma that had metastasised into my lung. And it’s stage 4, and that’s not real good.”
According to the National Cancer Institute, clear cell renal cell carcinoma – often referred to as ccRCC – is the most common type of kidney cancer, making up around 80 percent of cases. It’s also called conventional renal cell carcninoma.
Arnold said 3 Doors Down will have to cancel their upcoming tour dates, including their spot on the Summer of ’99 tour with Creed and their Welcome to Rockville festival appearance next week. Despite the diagnosis, Arnold struck a hopeful tone. He said his faith remains strong and that he’s not afraid of what lies ahead.
“You know what? We serve a mighty God, and He can overcome anything,” he said. “So I have no fear. I really, sincerely am not scared of it at all.”
He asked fans for their prayers and ended the message with a nod to 3 Doors Down’s 2008 track “It’s Not My Time.”
“I think it’s time for me to maybe go listen to ‘It’s Not My Time’ a little bit,” Arnold said. “Thank you guys so much. God loves you, we love you. See ya.”
