Lorde is officially back. And she has just announced she will be taking her new record Virgin on the road with her Ultrasound world tour.
The tour, which covers North America, Europe, and the UK, sees Lorde stepping into a new era. Here she’s promising a show that’s more stripped back and immersive than anything she’s done before. “Every show I play is a collaboration between you and me,” she wrote. “We meet in a room and we make music together… our bodies and the machines in search of something bigger.”
It’s classic Lorde — poetic, cryptic, and oddly comforting. She calls the upcoming tour “our masterpiece,” and if the vibe is anything like the caption, expect something far weirder and more intimate than your standard pop show. I mean, you need only look to the video for her lead single, ‘What Was That’ to realise that she has some interesting stuff cooking.
Backing her up is one of the most impressive and tastefully curated support lineups in recent memory. The run will feature Blood Orange, The Japanese House, Jim-E Stack, Nilüfer Yanya, Chanel Beads, Empress Of, and Oklou. This depends on the city though. It’s a genre-blurring lineup of dream pop, alt-R&B, woozy electronics and experimental pop. Really, it’s exactly the kind of sonic playground you’d want orbiting an artist like Lorde in 2025.
Virgin, Lorde’s fourth studio album promises to be a wild pivot away from 2021’s sun-bleached Solar Power. It really looks like on this next one, she will be diving deeper into emotional and physical textures. “Since last time I’ve been stripping away unnecessary layers,” she said. “Finding us more room to move.”
That sentiment carries through to the Ultrasound tour — which sounds less like a concert series and more like a shared ritual. While no dates have yet been announced for Australian and New Zealand, it’s only a matter of time before the Antipodes luck out. I mean, Lorde is literally a Kiwi herself.
Tickets go on sale May 16, with pre-sale kicking off May 14. So, as Lorde puts it: “Come see what’s under the skin.”
You’ve been warned.
