5 Seconds Of Summer Drop New Single “Girls Talk Boys”
Love ’em or hate ’em, 5 Seconds Of Summer are still turning heads left, right and centre.
The latest cut from the Sydney pop-punks is… Uh… A little different. Rather than playing into their usual ‘bubblegum pop meets power pop riff’ cards, the band take cues from the funkiest of ’80s pop-rock hits on “Girls Talk Boys”. Though we’ll probably lose a bit of cred for saying it, the new single… Doesn’t suck.
“Girls Talk Boys” is featured on the soundtrack for the just-released Ghostbusters reboot – check out our review – and the funky new sound comes courtesy of producer Ricky Reed (who’s also worked with pop gods Twenty One Pilots), a noted Ghostbusters enthusiast.
“The idea for the song came together in a jam session with me and a couple of other songwriters out in Palm Springs about a year and a half ago,” says Reed, “myself, a writer named John Ryan, another writer named Teddy Geiger, and another writer named Ammar Malik. Four of us drunk and jamming on things that felt like early ’80s dance punk, like the kind of downtown sound. We fell into what felt like a fun, silly, weird idea.”
But at first, 5SOS were a little skeptical to switch up their sound: “They kinda freaked out,” Reed tells Billboard. “They came to my studio in Echo Park and cut the vocal here and we had a great time working out the parts.”
On the off chance that the new cut makes you a newfound 5SOS fan, you can catch the boys on tour this September on their Sounds Live, Feels Live arena tour.
