Hellions’ Top 5 Songs To Sip Cocktails On A Thai Beach To

So the Indian Summer has come and gone, and Hellions are well imbued in the starry plight of the Opera Oblivia. As for the Thai summer, though… That rages on. Sydney’s trailblazing theatre-punks are no strangers to the Pattaya sun: they’ve made the trek to Karma Sound Studios every other year to lay screams and scathes down for their three studio albums, and after hitting the waves for their fair share of celebratory “track five is done!” cocktails, the boys have pretty much mastered the playlist game. They know how to get those ~beach vibes~ pumping, so with the Australian summer just a few months away, we had guitarist Matthew Gravolin curate his top five faves to accompany our impending drunken sandcastle-building.

Sit back, slip on some sunnies, and prepare to vibe the fuck out – then, of course, go pick up a copy of Opera Oblivia!

We also had a chat with Matt about the album itself – check that out too!

J. Boog – “Let’s Do it Again”

“This song is the musical representation of a Long Island Iced Tea. Smile, click your fingers and nod your head into a state of unperturbed happiness.”

Years and Years – “Shine”

“I literally cannot help but sing and dance to the chorus of this song every time it comes on. If you were to ask any of my bandmates about it, you’ll be promptly informed of a series of anecdotes during which I overturn furniture and make a general nuisance of myself, much to the chagrin of all surrounding.”

Stacie Orrico – “(There’s Gotta Be) More to Life”

“This song is melodically irresistible – put it on and see if it doesn’t take you back to a simpler time. If the final chorus key change won’t do it, I don’t know that anything will.”

Fleetwood Mac – “Dreams”

“Relax and reminisce. ‘Thunder only happens when it’s raining’, and I’m willing to bet that it isn’t during a day spent swilling cocktails on a Thai beach.”

The Cranberries – “Dreams”

“If you walked (or toddled) into a movie theatre, turned on your radio or television in the ’90s then you’d be familiar with this tune. You’ll surely be afford a few warm pangs of nostalgia, at the very least and i doubt you’ll have ever been so comforted by the yodelling of a pixie-haired Irishwoman.”

Opera Oblivia is out now through UNFD.
