Fresh Fruit: The Beautiful Monument

The Beautiful Monument

Fresh Fruit

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
Three quarters of the band are originally Queenslanders, but we’ve all settled in sweet, sweet, Melbourne. I guess the classic one to go for would be Flinders Street Station.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Lizi: vocals and guitar – the ability to freeze time; being the motherly one in the band – sometimes it’s a necessity – or to blow things up…  She’s pretty much Piper from Charmed, let’s be honest.
Shelby: bass – the power of healing, since Shel can cure any mood with her one-liners and ridiculous puns.
Laura: drums – invisibility. One minute you’re having a conversation with her, and the next, she’s just gone. Not there. Bye Felicia.
Andy: guitar – the power to speak to animals; this probably would have helped her out with her Biology degree. She’s definitely the book smart one in the band.

Name your three biggest influences.
A Day To Remember, Bring Me The Horizon, and… The third one is really hard to pinpoint, because we all have extremely different tastes in music. So, individually…
Lizi: The Ghost Inside.
Andy: Good Charlotte.
Shelby: Fleetwood Mac.
Laura: Ke$ha.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
It usually would start with, “Coffee?”, then a chat about what’s coming up for the band. And, of course, memes seem to always make their way into the conversation.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
I think we all have different approaches to this. Everyone tends to go outside, take a breather, chill out and talk, whereas Andy likes to find her own little quiet space to try to relax and mentally prepare.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
A memorable show for us was when we recently got to go back to our hometown of Brisbane and play a show at The Foundry. It was so good seeing our friends and family all come out to support us. Most of them hadn’t seen us play since we moved down to Melbourne a few years ago, so that was pretty special.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
A Day To Remember. Let’s face it, it would be amazing to be able to share the stage with the band that TBM as a whole genuinely love.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
We’ve all been seshing different things recently. Laura and Shelby have been listening to a lot of the bands on the Sad Grrrls Fest line up, Andy has been listening to The Brave’s Epoch, and Lizi has been seshing Hellions’ newie.

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Last year we dropped our debut EP, The Lost, and you don’t have to buy it because it’s actually up for free on Bandcamp, so win win. No, but seriously, if you’re looking for some high energy music, then you should definitely check it out!

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Nescafé or Twinings. Can’t get enough tea or coffee in our systems fast enough. But also, Ernie Ball or D’addario, since we’re forever buying strings in bulk.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
We all very much have a ‘never give up’ sort of attitude when it comes to our band – and just life in general. We’re hard working and aren’t phased by the effort, time or money required to get to where we want to be. We’re all willing to push past any setbacks or negativity that come our way. We’ve all been in other bands before, and know that this time around, we have the lineup right and something special here. There’s no saying we’re going to get there, but we’re most certainly going to try!

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Kevin Jordan of This Wild Life – not exactly a rock band, but hey, they’re signed by Epitaph so it kind of works?
