Rachel Maria Cox

Fresh Fruit

Triple J Unearthed

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
Since Rachel Maria Cox is my birth name I really didn’t get much of a choice. We did toy with ‘Dave and The Grohls’. Also if I were assigned male at birth my name would have been Benedict so I guess that.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
I am originally from Granville in Western Sydney. The Most recognizable landmark is South Street, home to Sydney’s Best Food and Worst Driving. We all met in Newcastle though. Newcastle’s most recognizable landmark is probably the beach, but I wouldn’t know because I never go anywhere other than work or the pub.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
RMC – Vocals/Keys/Guitar in solo settings. Their non-musical superpower is consuming more sugar-free Mother than should be humanly possible.
Brayden ‘Boots’ Porter – Lead guitar on the EP. His power is melting hearts and faces with his musical genius.
Jack Lundie –Rhythm guitar on the EP. His power is getting into the most messed up situations and surviving against all odds. He’s probably indestructible.
Oli Young – Drums on the EP. His power is putting up with the rest of us.

Name your three biggest influences.
Dad rock, having messed up mental health, and PJ Harvey.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
How lucky Jack is to be alive. Or which one of us is the ‘most Dave Grohl’.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
1. Drink too much water/tea/caffeinated beverages.
2. Have to do a nervous pee before the set.
3. Do vocal warm ups in the bathroom.
4. Get another tea or fill up water.
5. Shut eyes and hope for the best.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
So many good ones! Recently I played in Beatdisc Records in Parramatta with Lincoln Le Fevre, Nothing Rhymes With David, Zzzounds and Signore Cozzo. That was super special because Beatdisc was a really significant place for me during my awkward teen years, and to go back and play there with Linc, Dave and Dave, all of whom I love, and to see Seb play his first show and an absolutely nail it, that was nice.

My Dad came too, which was really special because Dad rarely gets a chance to come to my shows, and after the show someone said to me he was beaming the whole time which cheers me up. Also my favourite three gig kids were there and Ava (who is I think about 4 years old) came up after my set and said “You had the best songs out of everyone!” and I don’t know if you can get much higher praise than that!

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Three way tie between Avril Lavigne, Lee Harding and The Veronicas.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Nothing Rhymes With David – Things Work Out For People Like You. I’ve been waiting for this one since I met Dave at the end of 2014 and it’s better than I could have imagined.

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
It’s an EP called I Just Have A Lot Of Feelings. You should buy it if you like also having a lot of feelings. Also buy it at an EP launch show because it comes with a free cupcake. I also just released the first single off it so if you like that single you should check out the whole EP.

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Mother Energy Drink.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
I have a ridiculous work ethic and a lot of feelings. That may help me to scrape along somewhere just above the bottom and that’s all I need.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Gay Paris.
