Fresh Fruit

Triple J Unearthed

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
None. Pagan was the only name that was ever suggested. Actually, no – it was going to be “Pagans”, but when we tried to book our first show and emailed The Tote Hotel, their booker replied with nothing but a YouTube link to a record by a late-‘70s punk band called “The Pagans” who are one of his favorites. We dropped the ’s’ – which sounds heaps better anyway – and then he let us do the show and it was sick. I have also been listening to The Pagans ever since! They were a very good band.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognizable local landmark?
We are from Melbourne, and Pellegrini’s Pasta and Espresso Bar is not only the most recognisable landmark, but arguably the most important one too.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Matthew Giuseppe plays the drums, and his special power is making his younger cousins laugh.
Xavier Francisco plays the guitar, and his power is the ability to choose a good shirt to go well with a nice pair of trousers.
Nikola Elizabeth is our singer, and her super power is that she almost always arrives to appointments and engagements in a timely manner, but will let you know in advance if she’s ever running late.
Danny Roberto plays the bass guitar, and is very good at losing sunglasses but then finding new ones.

Name your three biggest influences.
Black Flag, Black Sabbath, black magic.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
“Have you eaten?”

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
2x Long Blacks, 1x ¾ Soy Flat White and 1x Soy Flat White. A platter of assorted cheeses, accompanied with a range of olives, sundries, crackers and preserves. Campari on ice, enjoyed with San Pel sparkling water and orange. A bottle of Pinot Noir valued at approximately $15-$20. Half a loaf of crusty sliced bread, lightly drizzled with olive oil and a pinch of rock salt. A chilled six pack of San Pel Chinotto, or a chilled six pack of Peroni reds (depending on who’s driving). A Margarita with extra mushroom and olives. A final round of espresso. Then we warm up to play.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
Let us not dwell on the past. One of the shows on our tour with Totally Unicorn this September and October is bound to be the most memorable one, so you should just stop reading now and buy a ticket.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Totally Unicorn! Throughout late September and early October! In cities and towns across Tasmania and the East Coast! Why? Because they are very cute and cool and drunk. What are you doing? Get a ticket!

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
La Femme – Psycho Tropical Berlin

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Our new single, “Wine And Lace”. It’s free on the internet so you would have to be a full cheapskate not to suss it out. We think it’s a pretty sick jam. Hot riffs. Tight beats. Slick hooks. You can dance to it, you can cry to it, you can make love by a fireplace to it. And it sounds very gnarly thanks to our mate and lord of record making, Mike Deslandes.

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Matt needs new cymbals and is a full time philosophy student, so yeah, probably some company that can give him free/cheap cymbals would be tight. Thanks for making it happen, Blunt! [fuck off lol – Ed.]

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
Late night deals in back alleyways, expensive handshakes, offers you can’t refuse, etc.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
I do or Kenny Rogers does.
