Fresh Fruit: Destroy Boys

Destroy Boys

Destroy Boys

Fresh Fruit

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
When it was just Vi and Alexia, we were thinking about Hard Looks… My mum recommended that. Destroy Boys is way better. Hard Looks is gonna be our label name, if that is ever a thing.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We’re from Sacramento, California – we like to call it the 916 (that’s our area code)! The most recognizable landmark is probably either the Capitol, or the wide array of hipsters moving in from San Francisco.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Alexia Roditis sings, Vi Mayugba plays guitar, and Ethan Knight plays drums. Vi does all the manager stuff in the band, and has a knack for bizniz stuff (she is writing this right now). Alexia is really good at reading people. Ethan is really good at sleeping.

Name your three biggest influences.
Alexia’s influences are mainly Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, Brooks Nielsen from The Growlers, and Siouxsie Sioux. “The main influence I take from them is the way they’re all true to their own voice, not the actual style that they sing in,” Vi says. “I don’t have specific people or playing styles as influences as much as I’m influenced by specific guitar sounds. I love really angry and chunky guitar sounds, like Christian Death and Minor Threat.” Ethan’s biggest influence is Burger King.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
How hot our practice room is, or why Ethan has a drum bag on his head.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Drinking a lot of water, talking to the other bands, and trying to breathe normally. Alexia goes into the bathroom to scream in the mirror right when we need her the most.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
Probably our record release show on August 10th. It was at an awesome local venue called The Red Museum. All of our friends and fans showed up, and it was just a big party with lots of love.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
FIDLAR would be tight. Their shows are crazy cool. Deftones would be super awesome, too. Or maybe Waka Flocka – he’s a nice man.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Vi is currently really into Street Punk by Hunx And His Punx. “It’s a really aggressive album with funny lyrics and guitar that absolutely rips, which it what makes an album for me.” Alexia doesn’t really listen to albums, but she’s been listening to a lot of Siouxsie and the Banshees, ABBA and The Growlers (Hung At Heart is a good album).

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
We released our debut album – Sorry, Mom – a little over a month ago! We put our blood, sweat, and more sweat into this record. There’s a lot of love in the album, and we’re very proud of it. We think it’s an awesome album for any rock ‘n’ roll lover. Also, Alexia’s a great singer!

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Pizza Hut.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
We all work really hard to get shit done, and we just do (Alexia speaking – Vi is the one busting her ass to make everything happen). What sets us apart is that we create music and do things for ourselves, not for the people around us or out in the world. We aren’t trying to impress anybody – we’re just writing what we want to write.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Tom Araya from Slayer. Grandpa Rock!
