Disney’s latest Marvel offering gets a name change.
Thunderbolts* ain’t what they used to be. Literally, in this case. Overnight, the latest Marvel movie underwent a quick (but clearly long-gestating) rebrand, and now it’s called The New Avengers. Just like that.
Spitting in the face of the spoiler-sensitive1 and destroying the SEO optimisation of countless articles and reviews, Marvel/Disney fanged out a reveal across social media, with star Florence Pugh revealing the name change.
Sebastian Stan, who plays smouldering hottie Bucky Barnes, got in on the action too, swapping out some bus stop posters.
So, that explains that goddamn asterisk. It’s a cute marketing ploy, and will probably drive the more casually curious to check out Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers in theatres, where it’s currently playing. I’m not a fan, but I seem to be in the minority on that one.
