Top 5 sets of Soundwave 2009 and some rad pics

March 11th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Photos

5. Bayside in Brisbane – closing their strange, concrete stage; wedged between cow sheds, while hundreds of kids packed in, hung off the balconies and sang along.

4. Say Anything in Adelaide – excellent band go crazy in front of 200 kids on a tiny truck. Awesome. They better be back soon!

3. Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster in Adelaide – the Alabama boys held a relaxing rock n roll picnic in the shade of the gum trees by all walking through the crowd. You had to be there. Wowee zowee.
2. New Found Glory in Melbourne – great song selection and the stage invasion from hell… mosh or die!

1. Every Time I Die in Brisbane and Sydney – the bottle incidents… holyyyy shit! Funniest band in the world? Yep. We cannot wait for this new record.

Anthony from Bayside reads Blunt too, do you?
PS. Yes i am aware that the above uber-linking could explode the internet. Living dangerously ‘09.

5 seconds with Josh James and Joshua Southwell of Evergreen Terrace

March 8th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

Evergreen Terrace’s last record Wolfbiker was sick. Did you know that? You should buy it.
Even Dan likes Evergreen Terrace and he hates everything (except soy latte’s and Sheena. And April.)
Instead of sitting down with Josh and Jason, we had numerous chats over the week in locations such as Rosie’s VIP room, Reide Iredale’s bedroom, a Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster hosted picnic and side stage of a hellacious New Found Glory set in Melbourne.
Fact #1 – Soundwave is Jason’s last tour with the band as he is leaving to work for Habitat For Humanity. Pretty nifty stuff.
Fact #2 – Josh was so pissed that we were wearing the same Coalesce shirt in Adelaide that he bought a tuxedo shirt instead. Word.
Fact #3 – Punk rock according to Josh…
“My punk band played with Face To Face when we were 14, so like, 11 years ago. The other bands on the show bailed and the promoter called us and was like, “yo! Can you dudes play?” and we were like, “yeah!” So we played and it was sick! Our guitar player stole one of Trevor’s picks and was all bad ass about, like “I just stole your pick motherfucker.” Face To Face came up to us afterwards and were like, “thanks for saving the show guys,” and we were all, ”we saved the show! Awesome!”…. In conclusion, no, i have not said a word to Trevor Keith.”
“Dude, i wrote a letter to MxPx 12 years ago because they were wearing NoFX and Rancid shirts in their promo photos. I wrote to them and said that that’s awesome they are wearing those shirts because those bands are awesome! I even included the stamped self addressed envelope! But the fucker’s never wrote back to me! So no, I haven’t said anything to Mike Herrera either. Though he was in the lift with me and Drew, our singer, in Brisbane and we didnt say anything to him, but after he got out we totally high fived then the lift opened and a bunch of monks got on so that kinda sucked.”

The 5 worst tattoo’s at Melbourne Soundwave

March 8th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Life is a competition. Don’t come last.

#5 – Tribal gone mad.
#4 – Feminists suck. And so does this photo (but that’s beside the point.) The tattoo down her spine says “I AM WOMAN” topped off with a upside down triangle. Fuck.
#3 – OK, i think this one rules, but Dan hates it so fair’s fair. Piece of cake!
#2 – The autobot symbol with bat wings. Baby Jesus is crying.
#1 – And the winner… Blunt’s very own photographic maestro, Kane Hibberd, and his Metallica tattoo. Wow.
Check out Kane’s website and all the pics on the Soundwave site – they’re all his baby!

5 seconds with Trevor and Derek from Unearth

February 26th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

The above photos are evidence of Unearth pummeling Brisbane to a pulp. Look at that sea of filthy dudes! And yes, we pinched these photos from www.myspace.com/unearth

A few hours after the carnage, we rendezvoused (with beers) for some questioning.

That set was pretty crazy, the crowd went nuts.

Trevor: Yeah, that was awesome. Y’know, start of tour and all, you hope it will be good, and that definitely ruled.
Derek: Yeah, that was sweet.

This stage your on, you must be having a good time. Aren’t all the bands mates?

Trevor: Yeah, totally. It’s almost the exact same lineup as we had on the Sounds Of The Underground tour a few years back. Like, every band. It’s going to rule.
Derek: Yeah, it’s the true metal stage!

You said that onstage already!

Derek: It’s true! But seriously, it’s awesome to see such support for metal and heavy music. In America, they have recently had a shift in radio programming for heavy music, so no metal gets played. Disturbed is as metal as it gets.
Trevor: They are the biggest band in America right now though!

Gross. So, “The March” was released a few months back, how has the reception to it been?

Trevor: Awesome. The fans are totally into it. In fact, the first single gets the biggest reception during our set, which is awesome. You know they want to hear “Black Hearts Now Reign,” but getting stoked on the new shit is really cool.

Will the beer bong be coming back on stage? Australians love beer related shenanigans.

Trevor: Really? I guess we better dust it off!

10 seconds with Roadrunner Records

February 25th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

Don’t ask me why, but on Wednesday, Roadrunner acts Funeral For A Friend and Behind Crimson Eyes dressed up in those giant sumo suits that they use on car commercials and Hey Hey It’s Saturday at Manning Bar in Sydney and beat the shit out of each other.

I collared a very sweaty Matt Davies, singer from Funeral For A Friend, for a pleasant chat.
How are you enjoying Soundwave?
Matt: Eh, it’s alright.
Only alright? Everyone else is raving about it!
Matt: Well, the festival itself is good, it’s just this weather. Im built for cold climates! The good thing is that you sweat onstage without having to move. Im a big fan of wearing grey shirts on stage because then the audience can see the sweat and they know that you are giving it your all, when in reality you are just trying to not fuck the song up.
That’s a pretty good theory.
Matt: I’ve got it all figured out. Nah, I spend most of my time on stage trying to hide from the fucking sun! We have been here before but it was Spring or Autumn, not this!
Haven’t you guys done Warped Tour in America? Surely that must be worse?
Matt: [shakes his head] Fucked…
Up next was affable Behind Crimson Eyes bass player, Garth Buchanan. Sure, they aren’t on Soundwave, but they bought me a beer and I am easily bribed.

When’s this new record out?
Garth: Next month. Second single is already floating about, hopefully people are checking it out.

How was the writing process? I know last record you guys wrote what you wanted to hear while flipping the bird to everyone else – was there lots of pressure to repeat the success of “Revelations…”?
We did feel the pressure; for the first time actually. The term “rock” was getting thrown around and that immediately raises lots of preconceptions in people’s minds; be it stuff like “writing for radio”, changing the sound etc. We were hammering each other idea wise, it did get pretty tough at some stages.
So you are on tour with Something With Numbers at the moment. How is that? Is the pairing of the 2 bands sort of weird?

Nah, it’s good. Obviously we are the heavier band, but we aren’t even that “heavy” so it’s all good. We had 800 people the other night at Doyalson, it was mental. There were crazy fights and supposedly people got stabbed after, insane.
What is on the cards after the record comes out?
Album tour with *, * and * in May – it will be super rad. [Blunt is keeping things from you for the benefit of humanity.]
You are down a guitarist. What’s the deal? Are you trying people out?
Kev just wasn’t feeling it anymore, which is understandable. We are really enjoying operating as a 4 piece though which I didn’t anticipate. We have the live stuff covered so we’re all good.
Finally, who won the wrestling?

We did! 3 – 2. Az had 2 bouts and won them, Josh won his and Cam and I got smashed.
