VANS WARPED TOUR 2011
This past Friday, Team Blunt braved freezing temperatures to party on at the annual Vans Warped Tour Kick Off Party, which for the first time in the premier punk rock festival’s 17-year history was held on the East Coast at the House of Vans in Brooklyn, NY (almost every surface in the building is skateable). Warmed by free beer and hot sandwiches, we listened to the slightly sozzled founder Kevin Lyman sermonize the importance of up and coming artists – no, we didn’t get to corner him and ask when Warped was coming Down Under – which led to kick arse sets from reggae-infused southern rockers Lionize and melodic post-hardcore nice guy types Moving Mountains. All this was viewable from the gigantic skate bowl that hovered above the stage in the back corner of the venue where Team Blunt had the pleasure of observing snappy board work from a horde of legendary skaters, several of whom got very close to sending our beers into the crowd. Headlining the event was nerd rap king MC Lars and his band Weerd Science, dropping tracks from his upcoming album Lars Attacks and current leaders of the pop-punk revival, The Wonder Years. Also shown was a preview of Warped! No Room For Rockstars, the documentary made about last year’s tour by skate god Stacey Peralta and friends which you can get a taste of here: http://vanswarpedtour.com/blog/id/1844471.
