5 seconds with Trevor and Derek from Unearth

February 26th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

The above photos are evidence of Unearth pummeling Brisbane to a pulp. Look at that sea of filthy dudes! And yes, we pinched these photos from www.myspace.com/unearth

A few hours after the carnage, we rendezvoused (with beers) for some questioning.

That set was pretty crazy, the crowd went nuts.

Trevor: Yeah, that was awesome. Y’know, start of tour and all, you hope it will be good, and that definitely ruled.
Derek: Yeah, that was sweet.

This stage your on, you must be having a good time. Aren’t all the bands mates?

Trevor: Yeah, totally. It’s almost the exact same lineup as we had on the Sounds Of The Underground tour a few years back. Like, every band. It’s going to rule.
Derek: Yeah, it’s the true metal stage!

You said that onstage already!

Derek: It’s true! But seriously, it’s awesome to see such support for metal and heavy music. In America, they have recently had a shift in radio programming for heavy music, so no metal gets played. Disturbed is as metal as it gets.
Trevor: They are the biggest band in America right now though!

Gross. So, “The March” was released a few months back, how has the reception to it been?

Trevor: Awesome. The fans are totally into it. In fact, the first single gets the biggest reception during our set, which is awesome. You know they want to hear “Black Hearts Now Reign,” but getting stoked on the new shit is really cool.

Will the beer bong be coming back on stage? Australians love beer related shenanigans.

Trevor: Really? I guess we better dust it off!

10 seconds with Roadrunner Records

February 25th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

Don’t ask me why, but on Wednesday, Roadrunner acts Funeral For A Friend and Behind Crimson Eyes dressed up in those giant sumo suits that they use on car commercials and Hey Hey It’s Saturday at Manning Bar in Sydney and beat the shit out of each other.

I collared a very sweaty Matt Davies, singer from Funeral For A Friend, for a pleasant chat.
How are you enjoying Soundwave?
Matt: Eh, it’s alright.
Only alright? Everyone else is raving about it!
Matt: Well, the festival itself is good, it’s just this weather. Im built for cold climates! The good thing is that you sweat onstage without having to move. Im a big fan of wearing grey shirts on stage because then the audience can see the sweat and they know that you are giving it your all, when in reality you are just trying to not fuck the song up.
That’s a pretty good theory.
Matt: I’ve got it all figured out. Nah, I spend most of my time on stage trying to hide from the fucking sun! We have been here before but it was Spring or Autumn, not this!
Haven’t you guys done Warped Tour in America? Surely that must be worse?
Matt: [shakes his head] Fucked…
Up next was affable Behind Crimson Eyes bass player, Garth Buchanan. Sure, they aren’t on Soundwave, but they bought me a beer and I am easily bribed.

When’s this new record out?
Garth: Next month. Second single is already floating about, hopefully people are checking it out.

How was the writing process? I know last record you guys wrote what you wanted to hear while flipping the bird to everyone else – was there lots of pressure to repeat the success of “Revelations…”?
We did feel the pressure; for the first time actually. The term “rock” was getting thrown around and that immediately raises lots of preconceptions in people’s minds; be it stuff like “writing for radio”, changing the sound etc. We were hammering each other idea wise, it did get pretty tough at some stages.
So you are on tour with Something With Numbers at the moment. How is that? Is the pairing of the 2 bands sort of weird?

Nah, it’s good. Obviously we are the heavier band, but we aren’t even that “heavy” so it’s all good. We had 800 people the other night at Doyalson, it was mental. There were crazy fights and supposedly people got stabbed after, insane.
What is on the cards after the record comes out?
Album tour with *, * and * in May – it will be super rad. [Blunt is keeping things from you for the benefit of humanity.]
You are down a guitarist. What’s the deal? Are you trying people out?
Kev just wasn’t feeling it anymore, which is understandable. We are really enjoying operating as a 4 piece though which I didn’t anticipate. We have the live stuff covered so we’re all good.
Finally, who won the wrestling?

We did! 3 – 2. Az had 2 bouts and won them, Josh won his and Cam and I got smashed.

5 seconds with Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster

February 24th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

Say hello to Alabama crazy’s Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster. We bailed them up for a chat straight after they destroyed Stage 6 in Sydney, with the setting sun providing a creepy backdrop.

How’s Soundwave going?

Dallas: This is the most incredible tour we have ever been on by far. The mix of bands is so great. Like even Bloodhound Gang are on it. I went and watched them just before and it was totally nuts. I havent listened to that band since i was like, 16, but it still ruled. The singer drank a pitcher of beeer, threw it up, threw it to the bass player then he drank it. It was insanity!

That is mental. So you want to see Bloodhound Gang, who else?

Roman: Horse The Band!
Matt: In Flames!
Dallas: Underoath!
Matt: Lamb Of God!!!
Roman: Every Time I Die! 36 Crazyfists!
Matt: Poison The Well!
Kelly: Dillinger!!

So every heavy band?!

Dallas: Yep!

So what else have you guys got in mind for all the time off this tour has?

Dallas: Well, we have a bunch of days off then we play 2 shows with Alice In Chains, which is a total honour for us, they are amazing. Then hopefully we sit around and eat a lot of Rainbow Trout and Kangaroo.

Maylene also have a new record on the way, stay in the loop by checking out www.myspace.com/mayleneandthesonsofdisaster

5 seconds with Shane Told of Silverstein

February 24th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

Yet again, camera failure is a total bitch.

We caught up with Shane after the band did a mental signing at the Brisbane leg of Soundwave.

How is your Soundwave experience so far?

Dude, this festival is so awesome. It’s super organised and the people are really nice and the lineup is crazy good. It’s going to be great. I listen to lots of different stuff, from really heavy to pop and the fact that kids can see super pop bands at the main stages then see super heavy stuff is awesome. Turning more people onto different music is always great.

What will you guys be getting up to on Soundwave? There is lots of down time to fill.

It’s super relaxed. We have some off days then shows with Anberlin and Chiodos then more festival shows. We will just chill, maybe go to Bondi and hang out.

I understand you guys have a new record on the way?

Yeah we do, we got the master today. Its a concept record, something we had never tried before so we’re pretty excited [for the record the album is called A Shipwreck In The Sand]

Then what?

Well we have been on tour almost constantly since we were last in Australia on Boys Of Summer, bar the gap to do the new record. We came from South America and it was crazy. We head back home then go on a headline album tour with Norma Jean and Blessthefall. Hopefully we wind our way back here shortly after.

5 seconds with Ryan Primack of Poison The Well

February 24th, 2009 by Blunt | No Comments | Filed in Interviews

Say hello to Ryan. And no, he doesn’t look like this now as our camera decided to commit suicide early in the day.

We caught up with him for a quick chat before the band hit the stage in Brisbane…

So how is Soundwave?

Well its super hot but that’s cool, were from Florida so were used to it. The tour has only just started but we are pretty excited, we haven’t been out here for years [on the 2004 Big Day Out to be precise.] Its cool to be on tour with our really good friends in Every Time I Die, Dillinger, Unearth, Evergreen Terrace… this stage were on, the “metal” stage, has pretty much the same lineup as Sounds Of The Underground a few years back, it’s awesome. Were all getting older so we might not be super raging every night, though Unearth will be. They somehow have titanium livers!

You guys have just released some 7 inches and have recorded a new record, what’s the go? The songs are sounding good, Purple Sabbath sounds like Cult Of Luna.

Well that song is actually a total Beatles rip off! That’s cool though. The new album is all done and ready to go. It’s not as “weird” as Versions. It’s gonna be out in May, get stoked!

Suss out for www.myspace.com/poisonthewell more info on their new stuff
