Brand New Confirm Their 2018 Breakup On The First Night Of A Tour
“Oh, we’re done,” says Brand New frontman Jesse Lacey at the first show of their US tour with Modest Mouse. Boos ensue, but Lacey continues; “Oh yeah, we’re done! And it makes nights like this all the more special, so thanks for being here, people.”
It’s not the first time this has happened, either. Their last show of 2015 saw Lacey tear up and sob, “I wanna tell you right here and now, this isn’t gonna last much longer, but it’s been so special for so long.” And last month, the band announced – without actually announcing it – that they’d be calling it quits in 2018.
As for how they announced it without making an announcement? They printed it on a fucking shirt.
The band are currently gearing up to release their as-yet-untitled fifth studio album, a follow-up to 2009’s Daisy and unless they decide to drop another one before the end of 2018, their last full-length. While we can only hope for an Australian tour before the boxes are packed, the band currently don’t have any tour dates scheduled at all following the end of this run in September.
Responding recently to the whole shirt situation, Lacey said, “We’re not breaking up. We’re just not going to play for anyone else anymore, we’re just going to play for ourselves.” Whatever the fuck that means, we don’t know. But we don’t want to believe it.
Watch the beginning of the end be confirmed below.
