Surfer Blood guitarist Thomas Fekete lost his battle with cancer on Monday, after he was diagnosed with a rare form of the disease last year. He joins an eerily large group of musicians to have died at 27 years old. The news was broken today by his wife, Jess Fekete, on the GoFundMe page set up to help pay for his medical costs.

“Our sweet Thomas passed on last night, peacefully in his sleep, holding my hand,” she wrote. “With one last sigh, he let go of the burden of pain and suffering that he has been bravely carrying for so long. I am full of comfort knowing that he is now free, and long for the day I get to be with him again. Thomas John Fekete, I love you and live for you. Nothing will make me more proud than being able to call myself your wife. Now, my beautiful angel, go find Bowie and jam.”

Fekete left Surfer Blood mid-tour in April of 2015 and underwent major abdominal surgery. Since then, doctors discovered the cancer had spread to his spine and lungs; he also underwent chemotherapy.

Between treatments from March to June of 2015, Fekete recorded a cassette-only EP titled Burner. All proceeds went directly to his medical costs. “Sometime between March and June of 2015 while healing from two surgeries and starting chemotherapy, I hunched over my four-track and created this disaster,” he said of the release. “No multiple takes, no expensive mics, no outside direction… Just me in my bedroom with a very cheap, bare bones setup.”

Surfer Blood commemorated Fekete in a tweet this morning, posting; “I love you Thom. Thank you for being part of my life. I’ll never meet anyone like you again & I’ll miss you everyday.” Tributes for Fekete have flooded in from musicians all around the world, including Laura Jane Grace, Young The Giant and Eternal Summers.

A memorial will be held in on the beach in South Florida in July, with details yet to be announced. In the meantime, all we can say is that our thoughts go out to Fekete’s friends and family – may he be ripping the gnarliest guitar solo with Bowie right now.
