For those that were wondering what came of Underoath when the post-hardcore heavyweights disbanded in 2013, well, former frontman Spencer Chamberlain has been busy. After dropping cryptic hints online throughout the latter stages of 2013, it was quickly announced that Chamberlain had teamed up with Stephen Bowman to form Sleepwave and that they’d be releasing their debut album – Broken Compass – through punk staple Epitaph Records.

Sleepwave marks the next step in the evolution of Spencer Chamberlain. “I believe in the power of a song and I believe in rock’n’roll but I also believe it is time for change in music,” the singer offered. “This is me bringing back things I think are missing from rock and pouring my heart and soul into my music to share with as many people that are willing to listen.”

It’s a more melodic and accessible alt-rock sound than fans of Underoath may be used to, but the intense songwriting that we’ve come to love and expect from Chamberlain is still on offer, brought together by powerhouse producer Dave Bendeth (the mastermind behind albums from The Ghost Inside, Of Mice & Men, Paramore, A Day To Remember and more). It’s anthemic rock that’s on offer here and it’s delivered with all the gusto that you’d expect from an artist looking to break out from their musical niche. The record may not be out in Australia til September 12th, but we’ve got a full stream of the album right here so you can judge Chamberlain’s latest efforts for yourself.

Keep an eye out in the next issue of BLUNT for our feature on Sleepwave (on sale September 25th from all good newsagents).
