Soundwave 2016 Is Cancelled; Oz Heavy Scene Weeps

Soundwave 2016

Well folks, if you happened to make it to this year’s Soundwave Festival, you can now proudly claim that you attended the last one. In news we probably all saw coming, the annual heavy fest is officially no more. Taking to Twitter this afternoon, festival founder AJ Maddah tweeted, “I am devastated to have to announce the cancellation of Soundwave 16 due to poor ticket sales. I am very sorry. I tried my best.”

The festival’s shelf life has been up in the air of late, particularly after already-announced headliners Bring Me The Horizon tweeted that they were “not 100% confirmed” for the festival. Following this, Tuesday’s announcement that Soundwave would not be going ahead in 2017 cast further doubts in the minds of many a punter. The Prodigy, Soulfly, Public Enemy and Refused all dropped the tour dates from their social media recently, and this morning alt-rockers L7 announced on their Facebook page that they would not be attending next year’s festival. The proverbial shit-storm seemingly worsened as the news came out this morning that the advertised venues for Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne had not yet been booked, with the festival set to take place in a little over a month.

In amongst all of this, Maddah has announced that Soundwave Touring will also be folding, and that he is “flat broke and physically and spiritually crushed”. A last-ditch attempt to get Rage Against The Machine back together also fell flat. With any luck, many of the previously announced bands will still make it our here for their own headline tours.

Despite Maddah saying that all Soundwave 2016 ticket-holders will be able to receive refunds, Tone Deaf have since reported that Eventopia, the ticket sales agent for next year’s Soundwave, will not be refunding ticket holders. They are urging customers to contact Maddah directly to receive their ticket refunds, which is in line with their ticketing sales agreement.

On behalf of everyone who’s attended the event in the last decade: thanks for the fuck-ton of memories, Soundwave.
