Refused Aren’t Fucking Dead; Announce New Album

Refused

After breaking up in 1998 and famously declaring “Refused Are Fucking Dead” it looked like the end for these Swedish hardcore punks. But after a Coachella reunion in 2012 and the announcement of Freedom, their first new album in 17 years, it looks like this death has been short-lived.

I guess you could say they refused to die. Ha ha ha, classic comedy. But all jokes aside, their first album since 1998’s iconic The Shape Of Punk To Come is some serious business. In a press release for Freedom, frontman Dennis Lyxzén states, “It’s not a reunion anymore. This is one of the most radical things we’ve ever done, both musically and lyrically.” Drummer David Sandström added, “Nobody wanted us to fuck with the image of the band who makes a great album and splits up. Nobody wanted us to dilute it. That actually provoked us.”

The first track from the new album, “Elektra”has hit YouTube and comes complete with a trippy kaleidoscopic music video. If this is any indication of the shape of Refused to come, then we’re in for a wild ride.

Freedom is out June 26th through Epitaph/Warner.
