A few of you might have already seen the video floating around that shows former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo making some rather controversial remarks at the end of his band’s set at Dimebash 2016. We’ve embedded the clip for you below, but it essentially shows Anselmo wrapping up his set with a Nazi salute and screaming “white power” into the crowd.

The footage from the Hollywood, California gig has racked up over 400,000 views on YouTube and even features a response from Anselmo himself, where he denies being a racist and attempts to explain that “white power” was in reference to an in-joke, because him and his crew were “drinking fucking white wine” backstage.

Phil Anselmo's response

For those of you who’ve been playing along at home, this isn’t Anselmo’s first brush with racism. In 1995 during a Pantera show in Montreal, Anselmo criticised rap artists for “pissing all over white culture” in what was essentially a speech about white pride. He later apologised for the offence caused by his outburst, but the image was one that followed him for years.

Flash forward to this latest incident and Machine Head’s Robb Flynn has had enough of Anselmo’s shit. In an 11-minute video, Flynn fires back at the singer and looks at the broader issue of racism in the metal scene.

Flynn, who performed at the show honouring the late Dimebag Darrell alongside the likes of Dave Grohl, Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo and Dave Lombardo, calls out Anselmo’s remarks, as well as the way metal fans have responded to what happened.

“I was there, and I can tell you for a fact that there was not a Chardonnay or a Pinot Grigio in sight backstage,” Flynn says, instantly dismissing Anselmo’s defence. “Only in the metal community is something like this so, so brushed off. No white person has been oppressed by black people. Quite the contrary. And it’s not okay to scream out ‘white power’ and then brush it off as a fucking joke about white wine, especially when there was none.”

The video is well worth a watch, and is the type of message we all need to take on board – regardless of what genres of music you like. Do yourself a favour and listen to The General.
