Sad news today from the AC/DC camp, with the band releasing an official statement on their website saying that frontman Brian Johnson has been told to cease touring immediately or risk permanent hearing loss.

The band hasn’t gone as far as calling it all off just yet, promising to reschedule the string of gigs they’ve just cancelled which would have been the final 10 shows of their Rock or Bust US tour, a tour that wowed Aussie crowds only a few months back. These rescheduled shows are likely to feature a guest vocalist though.

“Once more, a little louder?”

For a musician, there’s nothing more terrifying than the prospect of losing your hearing so it’s uncertain whether Johnson can risk standing on the stadium stage with lead guitarist Angus Young’s amp turned up to 11 ever again. If anyone was gonna go deaf from ridiculously loud music, it was going to be a member of AC/DC.

Having already had to replace founding member and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young, who was forced to retire due to a dementia diagnosis, will the storied rock legends continue with a new singer or finally call it a day? In the meantime the band’s Let There Be Rock Fund is still in full swing, so perhaps it’s a good time for budding vocalists to be refining their best “Back In Black” in the shower?
