Hold Up: There’s A Rage Against The Machine Supergroup In The Works?!

Rage Against The Machine

Before rap rock was associated with the likes of Limp Bizkit and Crazytown, LA’s Rage Against The Machine were busy fighting the good fight and cementing themselves as one of the most influential bands in music history.

Though all has been quiet in the RATM camp since their last live shows in 2011, the band took to Twitter a couple of days ago to point fans in the direction of ProphetsOfRage.com, a site that bears a countdown timer set to end in a little under two weeks.

Combined with the fact that posters have been cropping up in LA with the line, “Clear the way for the Prophets Of Rage. The Party’s Over. Summer 2016”, it was only a matter of minutes before fans lost their shit (and crashed the freakin’ site). Rumours began to take hold that RATM would be gettin’ the band back together to #TakeThePowerBack.

Well, according to Billboard, that’s not quite true. Shredder Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk are indeed joining forces again, but rather than a full-blown RATM reunion, they’ll reportedly be teaming up with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real to form a supergroup called Prophets Of Rage (yes, just like the 1988 Public Enemy track of the same name).

According to Rolling Stone, “This is not a Rage-specific reunion; there’s a lot more to it. There are a lot of moving parts, a lot of exciting news to be revealed.”

Their source also confirmed that the supergroup will tour, though the response was admittedly vague: “Whether that’s one show, or five shows, I don’t know. There are more announcements to come.”

While it may not be the Zack de la Rocha-fronted reunion many a fan was hoping for, we’ve apparently let the world slip into such a state that the rest of the guys felt it necessary to return to… *slips on sunglasses* rage against the public enemy.

In addition, Morello kindly reminded us all via Twitter that RATM did indeed predict Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy 16 years ago in the band’s video clip for “Sleep Now In The Fire”. If you’re curious, at about 1 minute in, a man can be seen holding a “Donald Trump for President” sign.

Stay tuned for the full Prophets Of Rage announcement from midnight June 1st.
