First There Was Babymetal; Now, Meet Ladybaby

The concept of cartoonishly dressed Japanese schoolgirls yelling over synth-laden metal isn’t exactly new – unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last year, you’ve probably heard about Babymetal, the young trio who took the net by storm in early 2014 with their bizarrely catchy viral single “Gimme Chocolate!!”. If you looked at Babymetal and thought to yourself, “This could be so much better if they replaced one of those girls with Andrew W.K doing death-growls in a dress” (come on, we know you did), then congratulations, Ladybaby is the answer to your prayers!

Ladybaby is the newest incarnation of performer Ladybeard, an hirsute, pigtailed, cross-dressing Australian man who has been forging a career in Japan over the last two years with a style of music he describes as “kawaiicore” and who lists his skill set as “pro-wrestler, heavy metal vocalist, party rocker and 24-hour photo opportunity”. Having now recruited teen girls Rie Kaneko and Rie Kuromiya, the trio have launched Ladybaby’s first single, “Nippon Manju” (roughly translated as “Japanese Bun”). It’s definitely worth a curiosity-view at the very least. Oh Japan, what will you think of next?
