Columbus Go From Strength To Strength; Announced As Main Support For The Ataris
Brisbane trio Columbus are doing a bang-up job of ascending the Aussie punk ladder, having just scored the main support slot on The Ataris’ upcoming tour.
Hailing from Indiana, the veteran punk rockers will be with us next month for the So Long, Blue Skies tour where they’ll be treating Aussie crowds to cuts from their breakout release Blue Skies, Broken Hearts… Next 12 Exits (1999) and the critical smash that was 2003’s So Long, Astoria. It birthed “The Boys Of Summer”, more affectionately known as one of the greatest punk covers of all time, and saw the band score some coveted radio play at a time when Linkin Park was ruling the airwaves. And yes, we flat-out refuse to acknowledge that that was 13 years ago.
For those of you that shy away from the bands of your youth peddling their latest wears in a live setting, then we have some good news: The Ataris haven’t released an album since 2007’s Welcome The Night, so these gigs are more or less promising nothin’ but wall-to-wall ’00s punk bangers.
Despite the fact that it’s only May, Columbus have had an enviable year to say the least. They inked a deal with renowned Aussie label UNFD and played alongside Neck Deep and State Champs at this year’s sold out UNIFY Gathering. In the months since they’ve given us a taste of their yet-to-be-announced debut album with “Replace Me”, and we dug it so much we had the boys hit Def Wolf Studios for a cheeky BLUNT TV session. They’ve already started recording with producer and former Defeater guitarist Jay Maas, so it’s a fairly safe bet that when this LP drops it’s gonna plant them square on the map.
