A New Red Hot Chili Peppers Song Will Be With Us This Week

Red Hot Chili Peppers

With little more than a tweet, seminal California rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced that their new single, “Dark Necessities”, will be out this Thursday.

The news follows remarks from frontman Anthony Kiedis back in March where he claimed the band was “in the home stretch” of wrapping up their forthcoming album, which comes a full five years after 2011’s I’m With You.

Details of the release are still largely under wraps, but we do know that this album will mark the first time RHCP have recorded with someone other than rock guru Rick Rubin since the band’s 1991 major label debut, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Instead they’ve enlisted the modern knob-twiddling prowess of Danger Mouse (Gorillaz, The Black Keys), with Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck) on hand to mix. Rumour has it Elton John will appear on the album as well.

Has it been more than a decade since the last truly great Chili Peppers album? Maybe, but we’re not willing to write them off just yet (we’ll save that for Thursday).
