The New Tonight Alive Song Is Very… Different
Unless you’re in a hard rock band from the ‘70s-‘90s and already heavily established in the music industry, it’s inevitable that at some point, you’ll need to reinvent your sound. It’s all about staying relevant, keeping up with the latest trends, and not letting your fanbase forget about your legacy in this tumultuous wasteland we call the alternative music scene. It happens to the best of them – Bring Me The Horizon became an alt-rock outfit, Fall Out Boy hit the bubblegum pop circuit, and now, for better or for worse, the latest band to ditch their riff-laden roots and jump into the synthesised deep end is Tonight Alive.
Opening with spacey, auto-tuned vocals and a pounding line of artificial drumbeats, “To Be Free” would lead you to believe frontwoman Jenna McDougall has ditched her beloved bandmates and taken a stroll down Solo Street. This isn’t the case, thankfully, but it’s crystal clear that the focus this time around is on McDougall’s melodic chops and not the band’s usual energetic punk vibes. It’s an interesting sound nevertheless; there’s a distinct PVRIS vibe going on, but aside from that, it’s unlike anything we can put our finger on.
Following on from “Human Interaction” – which similarly polarised fans – “To Be Free” is the second single (and opening track) from Tonight Alive’s upcoming third LP, Limitless, set to drop on March 4th. Before that hits shelves, the band will embark on a string of preview shows along the east coast, including a high-billed set at next year’s UNIFY Gathering.
Limitless is out March 4 through Sony.
