Modern Baseball Put Their Spin On A Violent Soho Classic For Like A Version
It’s the coming together of two great things: Mansfield grungers Violent Soho, and Philly indie-rockers Modern Baseball. In the country for their first ~ever~ tour of Oz soil, the latter popped into triple j HQ to lay down a soul-melting cover of the former’s breakthrough banger, “Dope Calypso”.
For those who haven’t yet caught the Soho bug (shame), “Dope Calypso” comes from the foursome’s 2013 sophomore, Hungry Ghost. Considering how close the track has come to being essentially our second National Anthem, we have to hand it to MoBo – an outfit definitely not hailing from Down Under – for taking the plunge.
Trading the OG cut’s scuzzy instrumentation for a lighter indie vibe, and chucking on some wondrous layered backing vocals, the new version feels strikingly original – more in line with MoBo’s signature emo style, but still hearty enough to sate die-hard Soho fans. The quartet also performed their new single “Apple Cider, I Don’t Mind” for the Like A Version segment.
Violent Soho’s third LP, WACO, dropped last month to universal acclaim (we gave it a perfect 5 B’s) and debuted at #1 on the ARIA Charts. Modern Baseball are gearing up to release their third LP next month – Holy Ghost is set to drop on May 13th via Run For Cover, distributed nationally by Cooking Vinyl.
Also on the horizon is Modern Baseball’s session with BLUNT TV, where they dropped for us some crushing live versions of “Apple Cider” and other new single “Everyday”. That’ll be up for your viewing pleasure in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out.
