Green Day Flip “Holiday” Lyrics During Show To Slam Donald Trump
North America’s presidential shitshow is amazing – not only because it’s essentially, in general, a year-long reality show (one of the ones where the writers are all royally coked out, too) that actually happens in real life (and determines the next four years of an actual country’s fate!), but this year, Donald Trump is the leading Republican candidate. Are… Are we sure 2016 is real?
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong isn’t particularly stoked on the idea of having Trump as the next US president – he’s not miffed enough to write another million-dollar rock opera about his campaign, but he is miffed enough to speak out against the human cheese twistie at any given opportunity. Cue: a recent show in New Jersey.
“You guys been watching the news lately? What do you think of our candidates for the presidency of the United States of America?” he asks midway through the bridge of American Idiot cut “Holiday” – to a sea of resounding boos. “What do you think of ‘New York’s finest,’ Mr. Donald Trump?”
His crowd growing more agitated with every mention of the orange-skinned slug, Armstrong continued, “No racism! No racism! No racism in this fucking room, I’ll tell you that right now. There is no white supremacy in this fucking room right now. We are coming together, tonight, here in New Jersey, to call bullshit on all the fucking politicians tonight.”
Post-rant, the lyrics were shaken up from “pulverise the Eiffel Tower” to “pulverise the Don Trump Towers” – instant revert back to crowd excitement.
Green Day’s twelfth full-length, Revolution Radio, is set to hit shelves next week (October 7th) via Reprise.
