FIDLAR’s New Video Features Nothin’ But Emojis
And you thought you knew your way around the emoji keyboard. We’ve loved the Cali punks in FIDLAR since we first heard their self-titled LP back in 2013, and given the gold they delivered when they shared their ’90s spoof clip for “40 Oz. On Repeat” mid last year, you knew you were in for something good.
With tongues firmly planted in cheeks, the band have gone and summed up life in 2016 by making the video for their song “Why Generation” entirely out of emojis. The clip features drummer Max Kuehn chowing down on a burrito before zoning out and watching what, by all accounts, is the most impressive use of emojis you’re ever likely to see.
From emoji FIDLAR members to angry emoji faces using their emoji iPhones to take endless emoji photos of their emoji car crash, the band and their team have gone all out. There were five “emoji”s in that sentence and our self-respect levels have plummeted.
Discussing the video with pedestrian.tv, director and longtime collaborator Ryan Baxley said, “I can say that every single aspect of the animation (except for the band characters) was created from emojis, from the smoke trails coming out of the rocket to the speakers on the side of the stage. If there weren’t emojis of the items we wanted, we made them taking bits and pieces of multiple emojis and stitched them together.”
Can you imagine what it’s going to be like in 40 years when you have to explain to your kids not only what emojis are, but why a punk band they’ve never heard of made an entire music video out of them?
