20 Bands To Watch in 2014

Aversions Crown

Track Name: “Hollow Planet”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: Our latest single. Super heavy. 24 guitar strings. Will Smith in Independence Day. We recorded it with Andy from Thy Art Is Murder as a stand alone single between albums. The video for the track had a huge response internationally so now we’re talking to labels about our next move, which is really cool.
Latest Release: Our single “Hollow Planet”.
Hometown: Brisbane, Queensland.
Website: facebook.com/aversionscrown
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’re going to Europe with Thy Art Is Murder in January/February, then we’ll be putting out the new record and touring everywhere we possibly can. Expect more super heavy jams coming at you sooner rather than later.
For Fans Of: Thy Art Is Murder, The Faceless and Nile.

Bare Bones

Track Name: “Villains”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “Villains” is the title track to our debut record and is about how we as a band feel a lack of substance and connection to music and art that is being mass produced and fed to the public. The passion and the soul from the music we grew up being inspired by seems to have been lost and it’s up to the few that remain passionate to keep the art alive.
Latest Release: We released our debut EP Villains in August of this year.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: facebook.com/barebonesofficial
What’s the game plan for 2014? From the start of 2014 we plan to get right into it with a video clip release for one of the tracks off Villains and also interstate shows in support of the EP. We have also started writing new material meaning a follow-up to Villains is on the horizon.
For Fans Of: Every Time I Die, Norma Jean, Gallows, Pantera and The Hope Conspiracy.

Born Lion

Track Name: “D For Danger”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: Lyric-wise the song is fairly elementary. It’s just that feeling of being jack of everything; bored of being civilised and doing the ‘right thing’ and just wanting to get fucked up and be a reckless arsehole. It’s pretty deep. The body of the song came together in about three hours.
Latest Release: “D For Danger” is our most recent release. Prior to that we had a self-titled five-track EP that we released in March.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: facebook.com/bornlionmusic
What’s the game plan for 2014? Recording a full-length album is pretty high on the agenda. We have a bunch of new stuff in the works and we’d also like to do a national tour and make it our biggest to date. Then we’ll probably move on to the world domination phase of our plan.
For Fans Of: The Bronx, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Grand Fatal, Blood Brothers, Hot Snakes and Fugazi.

Captives

Track Name: “Zombie Dog”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: We wrote this track in the studio last minute ‘cos we didn’t have enough songs to make a record. It’s about a rabid zombie dog rising from the grave to rip the flesh from your face. We tracked it live and added some spooky horns and organs for gnarl factor… we call it ‘Tasmanian Forrest Horror’.
Latest Release: Our five-track self-titled EP was released in September.
Hometown: Hawley Beach, Tasmania.
Web Address: captives.com.au
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’re heading back to the studio in February to start working on the next bunch of songs followed by lots of touring. We’re over the moon to be where we are right now and are really looking forward to the future on our quest for world domination \m/
For Fans Of: The Bronx, Rocket From The Crypt and Motörhead.

Caulfield

Track Name: “A Letter To Myself One Year Ago”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: A central theme through this song is that something has happened to this person. The lyric “I’m looking at life from the other side” refers to the reflections upon his life and missed opportunities. The reality is at any moment we can be struck down and rendered unable to live the life we so often take for granted.
Latest Release: Our debut full-length Vanity is out now through Halfcut/Shock Records.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: facebook.com/caulfieldoz
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’re planning a huge 2014. We’ve got some tours in the pipeline and we’d ideally like to take our live show overseas. We’ll shoot another film clip soon so that will hopefully make an appearance in the early part of the year. We’ve begun writing tunes for the next album so recording it might be on the agenda for late 2014.
For Fans Of: A Day To Remember, The Devil Wears Prada, Alexisonfire and The Amity Affliction.

Clowns

Track Name: “You’ve Got The Curse”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “You’ve Got The Curse” is the first single off our debut album I’m Not Right. It’s a punk/rock’n’roll tune that was written well before we decided to release an album, about a person we knew who liked to stir up a lot of issues and generally was trouble. It’s one of our more dynamic songs and is always a banger to play live.
Latest Release: Our debut album I’m Not Right was released in October through Poison City Records.
Hometown: Melbourne, Victoria.
Web Address: fuckenclowns.com
What’s the game plan for 2014? Tour, write and party on repeat all year.
For Fans Of: OFF!, Poison Idea and The Hard-Ons.

Have/Hold

Track Name: “Song For Bill Of The Trains”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “Bill” is a song we usually close our set with. We consider it a rather loud and immediate song. It’s a song written about abject human failure that stems from a specific violent and confronting incident Luke and Ryan witnessed whilst on the way to rehearsal a while back.
Latest Release: Song For Bill Of The Trains/Dexamphetamine Blues double A-side 7” is out now through Midnight Funeral.
Hometown: Melbourne, Victoria.
Web Address: facebook.com/havehold
What’s the game plan for 2014? Well, we’ve got some songs we’re looking to record and get out of the way, so they should bridge the gap between the 7” and an album. Besides the main goal of the album, we’re looking forward to more touring, more local shows, more friends and hopefully more people with the Have/Hold name on their tongue.
For Fans Of: Brand New, Something For Kate and Rival Schools.

Hellions

Name: “The Penultimate Year”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “The Penultimate Year” is basically about talented people being overlooked and surrounded by a sea of untalented people that are (somewhat) less deserving. It was inspired by an extremely talented violinist who sold out arenas and composed some ridiculous music, but when he went and busked in a popular tunnel he was completed ignored. The song kind of relates to us and our friends that work hard to get their music heard. It’s a general spit on the way the industry seems to work and the way that the media can be used to persuade the public to like and dislike certain things.
Latest Release: Our debut full-length Die Young was released through UNFD in September.
Hometown: Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane, Australia.
Web Address: hellionsaus.tumblr.com
What’s the game plan for 2014? Tour/write/record/release/tour/repeat.
For Fans Of: Stray From The Path, Defeater, Rage Against The Machine and A Day To Remember.

Life Pilot

Track Name: “By The Book”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “By The Book” is a song for anyone who’s been ripped off or left high and dry by the world. We’ve all been there. We’ve all tried to do something the ‘right’ way only to have it ripped out from under you. We released a clip for it a few months ago.
Latest Release: We released Compass, a 10” split with Statues, in March.
Hometown: Adelaide, South Australia.
Web Address: facebook.com/lifepilotband
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’ve got a new single on the way and a seven-track EP dropping in early 2014. We’ll be touring a fair bit, specifically down the east coast, but we’ve been wanting to get over to Perth for ages, so that’s definitely on the cards as well!
For Fans Of: The Chariot, Norma Jean, Every Time I Die, Pantera and Stray From The Path.

My Echo

Track Name: “Black Water Blues”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “Black Water Blues” is the first track released off our upcoming EP due out in early 2014. The EP was recorded over three days at the incredible Sing Sing Studios here in Melbourne.
Latest Release: Our new single, “Black Water Blues”, and before that our debut EP The New Approach.
Hometown: Melbourne, Victoria.
Web Address: myechomusic.com
What’s the game plan for 2014? Our second EP is due out in early 2014 via Ten To Two Records. We will continue to tour in support of that, as well as work on our next release.
For Fans Of: Stray Cats, Against Me! and The Clash.

Oslow

Track Name: “Desert Dog Road”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “Desert Dog Road” is a song that we released as a transition between our Field EP and our upcoming EP.
Latest Release: We released our six-track debut EP Field in August 2012.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: oslow.bandcamp.com
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’re releasing an EP in February, which we’ll be touring for, and we have a couple of splits in the works for later on in the year. We’ve also started working on what will hopefully be our first full-length.
For Fans Of: Brand New, As Cities Burn and Title Fight.

Saviour

Track Name: “Jaded”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “Jaded” is the first single release off our latest album, a track that truly represents all aspects of our sound.
Latest Release: Our full-length First Light To My Death Bed was released in October through UNFD.
Hometown: Perth, Western Australia.
Web Address: facebook.com/SaviourAustralia
What’s the game plan for 2014? Touring, writing and releasing more music.
For Fans Of: Melodic hardcore, emotional heavy music and metalcore.

Scalphunter

Track Name: “There Will Be Change”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: This song is about true Art Vs Corporationalism and challenging the watered down manufactured puss our youth are conditioned to listen to. It’s about young people standing up for a change in a music industry that fails its artists and celebrates its bureaucrats. Moreover it urges people to stand up and make a positive change in their lives, whatever that change may be. This is the first single from our third EP released independently by us in November.
Latest Release: We released EP III in November and we have an awesome 10” vinyl pack with CD and digital download all included.
Hometown: Perth, Western Australia.
Web Address: facebook.com/Scalphunter
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’re planning a national tour for the release of our third EP, we’re bringing out two split vinyl releases with some very awesome Aussie bands and a series of tours to support those releases. And during that whole time we are amassing new material to put towards a full-length album we plan to start recording at the end of the year.
For Fans Of: Punk/thrash influenced rock’n’roll, The Bronx, Every Time I Die, Cancer Bats, Gallows, Ghost Of A Thousand and Turbowolf.

Sierra

Track Name: “Decadence”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: “Decadence” was recorded while on tour earlier this year at Sydney’s Electric Sun Studios with Stevie Knight and we released it as a single in October. We like to think it showcases maturity from our earlier works. It also serves as an accurate indicator of where we are heading.
Latest Release: Our self-titled EP was released in February 2013.
Hometown: Mount Gambier, South Australia.
Web Address: facebook.com/sierraband
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’d like to work towards releasing something more substantial. Appearance-wise, we are fortunate enough to have already locked in spots at a couple of events we’ve always wanted to be a part of.
For Fans Of: Hundredth, Counterparts and Being As An Ocean.

Sumeru

Track Name: “Spines”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: Musically it was a joint effort, everyone bringing a riff in here and there. We write on the spot so songs come together pretty quickly, there’s hardly any pre-rehearsal creating. We’re a spontaneous lot! Lyrically it’s about letting go into a more expansive awareness. The old man, the ancestors, this is your intuition, your true nature. There’s plenty of juice to our dark sides, however we get stuck there a lot of the time and wallow in the shit, unaware of the vastness of our minds. This song acknowledges that freedom.
Latest Release: Our four-track self-titled EP.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: sumeru.bandcamp.com
What’s the game plan for 2014?: Definitely more gigs around Sydney and beyond. We are all very passionate about the live show and absolutely love playing together so that seems to be what’s getting us out there more and more. We will go as far as it takes us. There’s also another EP in the works that we’re slowly putting together coming out early next year.
For Fans Of: Hard and heavy down-tuned riffs.

Ted Danson With Wolves

Track Name: “Never Look A .gif Horse In The Mouth”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: It was named when we were sitting in a park getting sad after Milhouse’s last show at Black Wire. It was written soon after. It’s about cranes.
Latest Release: Our debut album will be coming out early 2014!
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: tdww.wordpress.com
What’s the game plan for 2014? In the first half of the year we’re gonna release our album and tour it! We’ve also recorded tracks for a split 7” with our buddies Oslow which we hope to have out later in the year so we can tour with those handsome devils again. And if we have time, we wanna do another EP by the end of the year as well.
For Fans Of: Cap’n Jazz, To The North, Ghosts And Vodka, Stockades and other noodly shit.

The Bennies

Track Name: “Highrider”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: Our guitarist (Jules) was severely injured while on tour in February 2013, he was unable to play guitar or move his arm for about two months. The first practice we had back we wrote “Highrider”. We all love the song for its musical merits, but it also (perhaps more importantly) represents pushing through shit times, not letting the bastards get you down and coming out on top.
Latest Release: We released our second full-length Rainbows In Space in November through Poison City Records and we are really proud of it.
Hometown: Melbourne, Victoria.
Web Address: thebennies.com.au
What’s the game plan for 2014? Tour, record, play Nintendo (there’s a new Mario Kart coming out in 2014) and keep repeating that process ‘til we’re dead!
For Fans Of: Sublime, Rancid and The Clash. I think if you like good times and hold a slightly left of centre interpretation of how the world works, you’ll dig The Bennies.

The Berkshire Hunting Club

Track Name: “The Metric Wade”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: The most unpopular Berkshire song to date, “The Metric Wade” is a practical guide to punk accounting and asset management.
Latest Release: Our 2012 EP, The Desperation For Comfort In Numbers.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: theberkshirehuntingclub.com
What’s the game plan for 2014? We’ll be releasing our first full-length album. We’ve got it all figured out. We’ll be unappreciated in our own country, but our gutsy noise-punk stylings will electrify the French. We’ll avoid the horrors of drug abuse, but we do plan to have several torrid love affairs, and may or may not die young. We haven’t decided.
For fans of: Pissed Jeans, BATPISS, Melvins, The Gladstone Hotel, Hot Snakes, Totally Unicorn and The Jesus Lizard.

The Sinking Teeth

Track Name: “Dead Breeze”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: I’m the kind of person whose mood is really dependent on the weather. Unfortunately Melbourne has the tendency to throw you a curveball weather-wise, so “Dead Breeze” is about chasing better weather and feelin’ damn good.
Latest release: Our five-track EP White Water was released in February.
Hometown: Carlton, Victoria.
Web address: thesinkingteeth.com
What’s the game plan for 2014: We are planning to do a second EP around March, an album around October and a fuck ton of touring in between, so it’s set to be a big one.
For fans of: Refused, Japandroids, Horsell Common and At The Drive-In.

Vices

Track Name: “Home”

Tell us about the song you’ve chosen: It’s a real cracker off our album featuring Prepared Like A Bride’s Ryan Bowles. It’s a song for all our friends we’ve made going to shows and how grateful we are for the constant support, floors to sleep on and free Wi-Fi.
Latest Release: Between My Mind And The World was released in April of this year.
Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales.
Web Address: facebook.com/thisisvices
What’s the game plan for 2014? We are heading to America early next year. We’ll hopefully be releasing a new album soon after that and then just solid touring around Australia, New Zealand and, God willing, Europe.
For Fans Of: Touché Amoré, Hundredth and R. Kelly.
