Getting To Know: I Prevail

Keen to more about your favourite up-and-coming bands? Sick of the same ol’ studio questions? From the albums they crank before they head out on stage to their must-have items when the tour van pulls into the service station, we quiz musicians about life on the road and how they came to love what they do. Up next: Detroit, Michigan’s I Prevail. Since earning some sweet internet mileage from their cover of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”, the post-hardcore act have been makin’ some serious waves in the heavy scene. Get to know the band’s drummer Lee Runestad below.

I discovered music when…

I found a cassette of Third Eye Blind when I was a kid. I would ask my parents to put it in the player every time I got in the car.

I realised being in a band was the best way to waste time when…
I met my first band mate.

My first band was…
Called Bucknaked and we only played one song, over and over again.

The first show I ever played was…
When I was 16 and decided to enter a talent show with my band at the time. This was the first show any of us had ever played, and of course it was awful and we didn’t win, but I was hooked.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
Working at Hollister Clothing Co. when I was a teenager. It was incredibly boring folding clothes all day and you had to say “What’s Up” to every person that walked in.

My favourite band is…
Blink-182. Travis barker really influenced me as a drummer.

A band that should never have broken up are…
Underoath. It’s really exciting that they are getting back together to play some more shows.

One album I play before I hit the stage is…
Pierce The Veil’s album Collide With The Sky. It’s really up tempo and gets the blood pumping.

I love being on stage because…
I love hearing the crowd reaction and having people enjoy the music we make. It’s an incredibly fulfilling feeling.

My favourite tour memory is…
Going to Las Vegas. It’s always a great place to be on tour. It only stops being fun when I count my money the next day.

The worst thing about touring is…
Hair maintenance and taking care of hygiene on the road. It’s much more challenging than when you are home.

My favourite servo/gas stop purchase is…
Coffee and dirty magazines. Please don’t tell my mum.

On the road I can’t live without…
Cell service. It’s the only thing that keeps me sane.

My favourite place in the world is…
A small shop in Cleveland, Ohio called Helio Terra. They serve the best coffee and vegan food. They are attached to a really nice gym that lets us work out for free. It’s a one-stop shop for everybody’s needs.

If I could, I would trade lives with…
Jared Leto. Who doesn’t want to be Jared Leto?

Check out I Prevail’s take on the T Swift mega hit “Blank Space”.
