Fresh Fruit: Young Lions
What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
I honestly can’t remember any in particular. I’m pretty sure we had the classic brainstorm session, and Zach had a big long list of ideas – Young Lions, just stood out so we went with that. Getting asked why we aren’t just called Cubs gets a little old at times, though…
Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We are from all over Australia, but call Brisbane home. I don’t know about recognisable, but if you find yourself here, you need to hit Lucky Egg up in the Valley.
Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Dan: guitar – will mix you up some damn classy cocktails.
Morgan: bass – incredible designer and artist. Fun fact: Morgan does almost all of our design work, including both album covers and almost every shirt we’ve ever released.
Zach: vocals – chef of the year over here. Breakfasts with YL are honestly next level.
Matt: drums – coming up with world-changing business ideas. Can’t put any here, though – don’t want you lot stealing them.
Name your three biggest influences.
This is a really hard one, as we all have so many artists that have impacted our playing over the years. Some of them for me would be Anberlin, Underoath, and Paramore.
What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
What kind of icy poles are in the freezer. Classic YL rehearsal break treat.
What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Usually hunting around for dumplings…
Tell us about your most memorable show.
Our album launch for Blue Isla meant a lot to all of us. Selling out a venue we all love and seeing it packed with friends, family and fans (the three F’s) was incredibly special.
What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Again, it’s really hard speaking for everyone, but within the realms of possibility, it would be an honour to tour with either Acceptance or Underoath, as all of us have loved their tunes since before we all got together.
What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Dan recently introduced me to Fire From The Gods, and I’ve been vibing on their latest release, Narrative – sneaky P.O.D influences, and really well-written parts all ’round, including some fabulous vocalisations.
What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Blue Isla – our sophomore album that we released last year. As for why you should buy it: it’s always good to be able to tell all of your friends that you discovered their new favourite band first.
If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
For the guys’ sake, I think I’d have to go with Fender – such incredible quality, and most of us could benefit from that. I’m lucky enough to already be working with my favourite drum brands (not really sure how that happened…).
Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
We’re genuine. Above all else, I think that’s what separates us from most other artists.
Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Aw, that’s a big one, lads. I’m going to go with Joel from Being As An Ocean – that thing is luscious.
