Wounded Pig

Fresh Fruit

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
We never really considered any other names. We used to use the term ‘wounded kid’ back when we were kids, as a descriptive term for vocals that were screamed aggressively. Since then, it’s gained other, more obvious meanings for us, but that’s where it began.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognizable landmark?
We are from Mount Gambier, South Australia. The Blue Lake is our most iconic landmark – it’s a huge lake located inside a dormant volcano. It’s water turns extremely blue at certain times of the year, due to algae, or witchcraft, or something.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Wounded Pig is Sam (guitar/vocals/drum programming), Jess (bass) and Ben (vocals/machine control). We have no superpowers – we’re just ordinary people that put on their pants one leg at a time like everyone else.

Name your 3 biggest influences.
First generation grindcore, Mortician, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Fuck… I’m Dead, Black Army Jacket, old-school hardcore, street punk… It’s hard to pin it down to just three!

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
Usually how tight or loose we just played, measured either in fingers or water tightness.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Coming from Mt. Gambier, our pre-show routine is normally a 5+ hour drive. Before the show, we like to drink plenty of water, have a fiddle with our instruments, and loosen up a touch.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
Our first show was probably the most memorable. We had only been jamming as Wounded Pug for about two months at the time. It was at the Dive Bar in Geelong with Liberal Cock, G.S.R, Amelus and Miley Mandala. The Dive was a very small venue that could probably squeeze 60 people – no foldback speakers either, which makes it tough for a drum machine band. There was no stage, either – we played at the end of a narrow bar. It was a fun gig!

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
We’d love to share the stage with Napalm Death, simply because they are an amazing band and a big influence on us.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Wretch – Tirades. (Furious grindcore from Canberra)

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Our debut album, A Permanent Mark, will be released on October 1st. You should buy it because it has 46 tracks and great value for money.

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Any music instrument company that can build a drum machine to our specifications. Roland… Boss… We’re talking to you.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
Our goal isn’t to make it to the top over anyone. It’s to play to as many people, in as many places with as many great bands as possible.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Tom Araya has a pretty glorious beard, and the guys from KADAVAR all have amazing beards, but surely ZZ Top have to claim the ‘Best Beard/s in Rock’ award.
