Triple J Unearthed

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
The only two I can think of are Single Season and Middlecase. My dad wanted to call the band Cage ’n’ Turf.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We are from Newcastle. Landmarks include Joey Johns, a phallic tower, and lockout laws before they were cool.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Spencer Scott – Bass/Vocals – Extreme Professional Wrestling Knowledge.
Aidan Roe – Guitar/Vocals – Being Mistaken For Other People.
William Houlcroft – Guitar – Casual Conversation With Strangers.
Liam Tobin – Drums – Lawyer Superpowers.

Name your three biggest influences.
Brand New, Tigers Jaw, and The Smith Street Band.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
Recent vinyl purchases – especially if the packaging was particularly nice. Also, any upcoming shows we are playing or going to.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Pacing nervously and drinking too much water.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
Our first show at The Hamilton Station Hotel was pretty amazing – that was also our EP launch. So many people came to check us out, and we got to play with All In A Year, Jacob, and Rachel Maria Cox, who are all amazing.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
We would love to play with Brand New, that would be a dream come true. There’s only two years left to get that one in the bag, though.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Tie Your Soul To Mine by Safe Hands. We know the guys in the band personally, and we were blown away by their new album; it is such an interesting step up from their last one. They absolutely crush it live, too. Also, last month Spencer listened to Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday for the first time: he is pretty excited about it.

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Our self-titled debut EP is our latest (and only) release! We recorded it at RTN Studios in Newcastle with Geoff Mullard. We were lucky enough to release it through Lost Boy Records, which is a great DIY label from Sydney. We think it’s a pretty good introduction to us as a band.

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Spencer desperately wants his own brand of signature ear plugs (shoutout to EarPeace). It would be a nice upgrade from the Blu-Tack Liam sticks in his ears like a jungle animal. But if not EarPeace, maybe at least Blu-Tack.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
A combination of dumb luck and our strong Instagram aesthetic, where we only post black & white photos. It looks so fancy!

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Everyone in the band but Spencer.
