Fresh Fruit: Molly
What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
Before settling on the name Molly, we had a lot of weird and disgusting ideas. For example, Cancer Fuck, which was a little too much considering we are playing melodic fast rock and not Norwegian black metal. Another one was Hernia, because Malte had been operated on several times for hernia conditions – but we ended up using Molly because it is Malte’s nickname, and it sounded good, we guess.
Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We are from the suburbs of Copenhagen, but moved to the city about 10 years ago. Copenhagen has got great looking girls, a lot of bikes, Japanese tourists and dudes drinking beer in the streets.
Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower
Malte sings and plays guitar. He can control cats and other pets just by staring at them. Spooky stuff.
Tobias plays the bass, and has the power to get anything he wants. Anywhere in the world. Yeah.
Mathias plays drums, and he’s got a drivers license and an adult credit card. [Holy shit – ed.]
Name your three biggest influences.
We are obviously influenced by bands from the late ’80s early ’90s American rock scene, like Hüsker Dü, Dinosaur Jr. and The Flaming Lips. I guess we are also influenced by a lot non-musical things… Stupid people, good people, etc.
What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
We usually try to find a way to pay for the rent of our rehearsal room, though that can take several hours / weeks. Besides that, we like a cup of coffee with a Danish pastry and a pipe of tobacco.
What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
None. We save our (remaining) energy for the show. So, we just hang out and see the other bands play, maybe socialise and get to meet new people. We also like to eat some good food and take a walk around the city.
Tell us about your most memorable show.
Playing with Dune Rats at Birthdays in London last year was SICK! But most of that tour was pretty kick-ass. We’ve had a lot of great experiences – some of them not on stage but before or afterwards. Roskilde Festival 2015 was a big thing though.
What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Miley Cyrus. She seems to be a lot of fun.
What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Meat Puppets’ II been spinning a lot lately, and Ariel Pink’s Before Today. Also a lot of new Danish music, and of course the Dunies, Skeggs, DZ Deathrays and other cool kangaroo bands.
Tell us about your album Molly and why should we buy it?
Buy it because you always get a free gift. Sale 24/7, half price and stuff. The forthcoming album is actually a hybrid of our 12” vinyl release Peach Melba (2015) and our recent EP Sunshine Seems Important (2016), so we could kinda pick what we liked the most. All of the songs were recorded live over a single weekend to give it that energetic and chaotic feeling.
If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Mercedes Benz; Rolex; maybe Nike… It’s hard to choose. Maybe BMW – or just any German car company.
Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
First of all, we play faster than other bands, and if the sound engineer isn’t a complete idiot, we play louder too. Luckily it’s not a competition, and everyone in the musical arena is a loser anyway. Especially those who make it to the top. We don’t have any wishes for glorified fame and millions of dollars (it would be nice though), but it would be cool to get guitar rock back on the “menu” and move or unite people in some kind of way. We are going to make it because no one can live without guitar rock!
Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Craig David and Hulk Hogan are two pretty good contestants, though they’re not in the rock biz. Toby (bass) is the only one who can grow a proper beard, so we are not much of a beard band… Dave Grohl and Craig David actually had the same beard “thing” going on in the late ’90s early ’00s: thin lines and sharp edges!
