Fresh Fruit: Malibu Stacy
What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
We knew right from the beginning that we wanted to be named after something from The Simpsons, so we spent some time going back and forth with each other naming Simpsons characters or certain things from episodes. At one point, we were nearly going to be called Hank Scorpio, but eventually the name Malibu Stacy came up and we just knew that it was meant to be!
Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
The Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The most recognisable landmark is probably the Big Pineapple, or the absolutely incredible beaches. We’re spoilt up here.
Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Jordan Olive – Vocals / the ability to regale you with useless pro wrestling trivia.
Dylan Randal – Drums / he’s actually Starlord, man. Legendary outlaw.
Jack Marsho – Guitar/Vocals / the ability to fall asleep in the van, in any position, at any time.
Dylan Almberg – Bass / the ability to regale you with useless Star Wars film trivia.
Antony Borrmann – Guitar / can get you 10% off the ticketed price at JB Hi-Fi.
Name your three biggest influences.
My Chemical Romance, Four Year Strong, and the entire Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack.
What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
If it’s not internet videos or movie trivia, usually pictures of doggos doing their thing.
What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Silly vocal warm ups, tune up, and a beer/OJ.
Tell us about your most memorable show.
We played a club show last year in Sydney with Undercast which was pretty memorable. We drove all the way down overnight, cramped together in a station wagon, and had just put out our second EP, Leave You Behind. We played our set to a packed club and, to our surprise, people were right up in our faces singing along. It was the first time we played interstate with such a warm reception and it was a killer vibe!
What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
If we’re talking fantasy, then late 1990’s/early 2000’s Blink-182. Sorry, Skiba.
What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Hellions – Opera Oblivia. It has such a cool vibe to it and so many new elements, kinda like if Panic! At The Disco had balls and huge riffs!
What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Our latest release is a five-track EP called Internecine and you shouldn’t buy it! You can stream it online via the usual spots or download it for free from our Bandcamp. Instead, use that money to go a local punk or hardcore show, donate to your local animal shelter, or buy your mum something nice!
If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Lord Of The Fries!
Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
I don’t think we’re too concerned about making it to ‘the top’, really. We just want to create music we all love, be able to travel to new places, and most importantly, have fun. Anything else that comes out of it is a bonus!
Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
None other than our fearless leader, Mr. Jordan Olive.
