What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
I know we really wanted to be called Baxter (Nina and Dave’s other family name) but that was taken. After that, not even joking, we were gonna call ourselves Patting A Pony. It all came about when I was having a really bad comedown while attempting to play an acoustic show in this beachside hotel – I realised it wasn’t going too well, and I really needed something to cheer me up. So I walk down to the beach, and I’m standing under the jetty wondering how I’m gonna turn my day around. Then, out of nowhere, a pony brushes up against me looking for pats! DAY MADE! Thanks, random astro pony!

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We’re from Adelaide, and unfortunately the only real landmark we have is the Malls Balls. It’s just two giant metal balls stacked vertically in the centre of town.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Nina – vocals: sleeping in any situation and through anything, especially after a big night. I’ve literally carried her onto a flight before because she just wouldn’t wake up. Can’t believe they let us on.
Jay – bass: a dude to the point of superpowerdom. We even surprised him on stage with a “dudest moment of the year” award in 2013 after he did a massive sleepless drunken solo mission that saved the tour. the rest of us were passed out and in no state to get ourselves to the next city, and he got us there. Legend. Dude.
Dave – drums: secret super genius. He seems chill, he seems normal, he hangs out, socialises, drums in a punk band. But behind the facade is a guy that reads an entire biography on a politician in the car between cities front to back. He knows so much stuff, but you’ll never know unless you ask him.

Name your three biggest influences.
Our biggest musical influences would be Sublime, NOFX and Refused. I like to think we sound like those three in a psychedelic blender.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
Lately it’s probably what Dave’s baby Cooper has been up to. That kid is a little legend and it blows our minds that someone in the band actually has a baby. Hectic!

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
Finding Dave.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
This is a common question, and every time it’s asked, the first thing I think of is playing with Refused. It was the best and the worst. We played to the biggest crowd we’ve ever played to, with one of our favourite bands. But at the same time, I got a huge electric shock pre-show that blew the whole lighting system… Then my amp didn’t work for 5 minutes – for no reason – when we walked out on stage, and in the last song, Jay tore his Achilles’ tendon. It was just weeks before out first national tour with an international headliner, which eventually led to us pulling out just 4 shows in. It was still the best thing ever, though, and none of us would take it back for the world.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Ultimate dream for me is touring with NOFX. They’re just that band for us. The mecca!

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Royal Headache’s new album, High, is just the most addictive listen ever. I didn’t really like them, but then ultimate good guy Bosma from Jackknife highly recommended that I watch them at Laneway. It changed everything. They have the best ‘no fucks given’ vibe. After that, I’ve listened to that album nearly every day for a month!

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Mother Crab is our latest release. We’re super proud of it, and you should buy it because we’re not big enough to be on torrent sites yet.

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Sea Shepherd. Don’t really know what that would entail, though.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
Do we need to? We really like where we’re at! We’ve got the greatest fanbase in the world, we know a good half of all of our fans around Australia personally, because they’re just such nice people that are down to party and hang out. Sure, we wouldn’t mind more people knowing about us, but we’ve got it good and we’re grateful for every bit of it!

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Tyler from Foxtrot. His beard makes me so happy.
