Triple J Unearthed

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
Honestly, when the band first started jamming, Lou threw out the name as it was something she had thought about for ages, and there were no objections! I mean, c’mon – who doesn’t love Daria (if you didn’t get the reference, Jane Lane is Daria’s best friend from the awesome ’90s cartoon).

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We don’t exactly live next door to each other: two of us from Brisbane, two from the Gold Coast and one right in the middle of both. Movie World is clearly the best thing in Queensland – it’s where Batman lives! Batman is our landmark!

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Our frontlady Teigan can flawlessly banter about anything and everything, which is helpful both on and off the stage. She also possesses mad skills at finding a flanno and making it work.
Febe plays some killer lead guitar and is some kind of secret agent when it comes to meeting celebrities, whilst also being a die-hard foodie. She fights her battles around Masterchef.
Kate (Skewie), on rhythm guitar, has this formula that when she drinks beer, she turns into a fearless Karaoke warrior
Bassface Lou saves lives one hair at a time by being the Edward Scissorhands of Brisbane.
Drummy McDrum (Kayla) fights the fight through interpretative Drake dancing, whilst slinging the most memorable Simpsons quotes.

Name your three biggest influences.
I think what brings the magic of BJL together is our diverse love of different music genres. When we get down to specifics, we would have to say Joan Jett, Kurt Cobain and Parkway drive – they’re just a few of many influences. We could honestly go on for days, because we all just love music.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
This might sound a bit weird, but we have a band-wide love of the TV series Orphan Black. So, naturally, every chance we get, we talk about Orphan Black and how amazing it is. Not only at rehearsal but in the band chat, at shows and when we have drinks together. It’s a really good show, okay!?

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
We don’t have any sort of weird and wonderful ritual – sorry to disappoint. Mostly, we like to make sure we all get to hang out prior to the show, have some drinks and bonding time. If it’s a bigger show, we like to hug and amp each other up… Don’t tell anyone.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
We had the opportunity to support The Bennies a few months back, which was AWESOME. Such a good crowd, and some of the nicest dudes we have met. That show also had Clowns and Axe Girl, so that made it even more memorable.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
We are open to anyone! Australian artists are in our sights over the next couple of years -Violent soho, Courtney Barnett and Adalita, to name a few. The Australian music scene is only growing, and we just want to be a part of that.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Amy Shark is a friend and fellow upcoming artist from the Gold Coast, who has been writing some really cool stuff. We also love listening to The Bennies, and more recently, Halsey.

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
In June/July we released our very first EP, that we are super proud of. This was after it took us roughly two years to get something recorded that we were really happy with. We had a lot of help from our producer, Guy Cooper, finding the right mix so that the same kind of energy we play with during a show could be portrayed through a speaker. You should probably buy it because if you can’t come to a live show, we have made it so that it basically sounds like you’re there with us!

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
KFC. Nah, in all seriousness, I think Vans would be very handy. We love their shoes and merch, and it would hopefully lead us to playing a Warped Tour.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
We play alongside so many great bands. We never try to be better than anybody – we just do what we do. In saying that, we get a lot of positive feedback on our high-energy performances. But I think that just comes from our love of playing live music.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
There can’t be a better beard in rock than The Beards themselves. Aside from having exceptional facial hair, they sing about it!
