Fresh Fruit: Ambleside

Fresh Fruit

Triple J Unearthed

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
Baxter. Literally for no reason at all, may we have been called Baxter.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognizable local landmark?
Adelaide, South Australia – accommodating not too much, besides a slow-paced lifestyle, hills, nice beaches, and infinite kebab shops.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Daniel Stevens: vocals – Staunch Stevens punches down mountains with his face.
Dean Lawrence: guitar/vocals – the galactic DJ that spins a mix with planets’ rings as vinyl.
Jackson Buckler: guitar/vocals – heart melting breakdance wizard.
Jonathan Young: bass – magical power strength level: Scottish Army Tank.
Ash Mayes: drums – four stomachs; demolisher of all evil.

Name your three biggest influences.
Going back to the early origins of the Ambleside shaping, we were flexin’ Your Demise, early Amity and Stick To Your Guns pretty hard. These days, we appreciate anything for what it is, really, and get inspired by whatever we vibe!

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
As we all live together and practice at home – without fail, someone will always ask what everyone is having for dinner.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
We tend to find the closest place with the most friends nearby, and become guilty of the cold, hard max chill.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
It happened on the 27th of February this year in Melbourne – Arrow On Swanston – during the Saviour tour with Ocean Grove. That particular crowd really threw the energy right back at us, and it felt like we all shared something really special together.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Any of the boys, or maybe just the boys… We just like playing shows, really, so something like a festival circuit is going to make us do a happy!

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Ooooooh! Trophy Eyes – Chemical Miracle. Don’t ask, don’t tell – just prepare yourself.

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Our new EP, Shape Me, which according to our friends, sounds like a bit of a blend between Alexisonfire, Touche Amore and Trophy Eyes – could!

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Currently trending through the Ambleside house seems to be Cliff energy bars. But hey, guitar strings, BP/fuel, Commonwealth Bank or Jetstar would be sick – drop us a line guys!

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
All other contenders better watch out because we like the taste of beer, can slay a set change-over and have a healthy, drunk relationship with albums by Maroon 5 and Avril Lavigne. We deadly.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
To be honest, the first beard that comes to mind would be Josh Merriel of triple j’s Short.Fast.Loud. He got dat flavor going on!
