Fresh Fruit: After Change
What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
Umm… Terrible ones. I think one was “We Are Here”.
Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We are from Adelaide and the landmark that’s most recognisable would be Malls Balls in Rundle Mall.
Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Josh Baker (guitar, lifting weights); Jake Rogers (guitar, drinking alcohol and not passing out); Paul Giuffreda (drums, making foreign foods); Jed Hitchcock (bass, getting drunk off of two beers); Dan Richards (vocals, watching more NHL games than any human alive).
Name your three biggest influences.
Linkin Park, John Mayer and Rage Against The Machine.
What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
It’s either Jed harassing someone or about how loud Jake’s amp is.
What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
We get together, hi-five, and go to the toilet (separately).
Tell us about your most memorable show.
Probably playing Mount Gambier. We drove five hours, unloaded our whole backline, checked into our hotel room and by the time we arrived at the venue at about 10pm, a truck had hit a stobie pole outside and the whole venue blacked out and we had no power to play, so we played by phone light and did a fully improvised acoustic set. It was actually probably our most interactive show.
What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Rage Against The Machine because they changed the way people think about music.
What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Well I guess we all have different ideas of the most exciting album but I’d say personally it’d be Coves out of Adelaide. I hadn’t heard of them before and their live show and songs I have heard are incredible. So it’s not really an album, but wow they are super impressive.
What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Most of our current stuff is available for free but without giving too much away, our next release should be bought because it’s better than the rest of our stuff [laughs]. We’ll be announcing it soon!
If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Gibson USA. We all play guitar and it’d be nice to not have to pay a lot of money for gear from now on [laughs].
Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
IF we make it to the top, it’ll be because we work super hard and love what we do.
Who has the best beard in rock?
Joel Torres of Adelaide band The Away Game – HANDS DOWN.
