A War Within

Fresh Fruit

What other names did you consider calling yourselves?
We went through a whole bunch of names at the beginning. It was almost two years ago, so it’s hard to remember all of the possible names we came up with. We always joke about the band and call it A Battle Inside – like an alter ego.

Where are you from and what would be the most recognisable local landmark?
We’re from Detroit, Michigan. The landmark depends on what you like: there’s Joe Louis’ fist and the sitting statue near Hart Plaza. Sports are really popular in Detroit – there’s Joe Louis Arena and Ford Field. From a music point of view, there are some big venues around like St. Andrews, the Crofoot and the Fillmore.

Who is in your band, what do they play and what is their non-musical superpower?
Spencer Maybe does the singing and bass playing. He is the dad of the band and pretty much manages the day to day of everything we do. His magic power is to gracefully twerk while playing on stage.
Armando Castaño does the screaming and bass playing as well. He’s from Colombia and has lots of connections with Tony Montana. His magic power is to sleep anywhere and to shoot tacos from his hands.
Jereme Stebila plays guitar. He loves his phone like a woman and equally with baked potatoes. His magic power is to have absurd things occur to him. He also hates vegetables.
Nikhil Rao also plays guitar. He’s amused by sights and bridges. His magic power is to write words in a diary and to smile obnoxiously in every photo taken of him.
Micah Link plays drums. He’s the newest member and is from Idaho. He’s the strongest body builder in the world but has never won any awards. His magical power is to become invisible at any moment and create the most powerful duckface in the history of ducksfaces.

Name your three biggest influences.
Baby Jesus, Babymetal, and baby back ribs with BBQ sauce.

What’s the usual first topic of conversation when you take a break at rehearsal?
It’s usually food. We’re unbelievably hungry, all the time. We spend most time thinking, talking and eating food. We usually eat during rehearsals, and sometimes performances too.

What’s your pre-show warm-up routine?
We do deep squats and knee bends. It’s always good to stay loose. We drink lots of water and tea to keep our throats lubricated and healthy. We also take lots of naps. It’s important to stay rested before going nuts on stage.

Tell us about your most memorable show.
We’ve played some incredible shows, but either playing the Warped Tour in Detroit last year or the San Antonio date on the Drop The Gloves Tour (with Miss May I and Blessthefall), where Armando got to celebrate his birthday by doing guest vocals with Miss May I.

What band would you most like to share the stage with and why?
Linkin Park. We’ve been fans of them for a long time and we jam out to their songs in the van all the time.

What’s the most exciting album you’ve listened to recently?
Believe, by… A War Within. it’s been rated the hottest new album by Bruce Willis.

What is your latest release and why should we buy it?
Well I think I’ll have to say Believe just because people like Bruce Willis really love it. So if the star of Die Hard likes your music… Well, it must be good.

If you could be endorsed by one company, who would it be?
Taco Bell. We love to eat there all the time. We’ve met many old and new fans there. In fact, 100% of our album sales have been from Taco Bell employees.

Why are you going to make it to the top over all the other contenders in the musical arena?
We work really hard and are also sexy individuals. We all have great headshots, and are always available for casting calls. We do everything ourselves as well, from recording and production to music videos and touring. We’re a completely independent band that does nothing but strive to get attention from industry and fans alike. Every day, we work to build our fanbase and we’re pretty relentless about it. Plus, Bruce Willis endorses our band, so it’s a sure thing.

Other than Dave Grohl, who has the best beard in rock?
Other than Nikhil’s fresh beard, I know Rob Zombie rocks a gnarly one. Spencer’s beard would get a lot of attention, but he lets it stay around five o’clock for that Colin Ferrell look. I don’t know if he’s very ‘rock’, but Joaquin Phoenix has a nasty beard.
