Ever Wondered What It’s Like To Get Drunk And Meet Harrison Ford?
Well, have you? Drunken encounter or not, it’s been a lifelong dream of at least a few of the BLUNT staffers to come face-to-face with Han Solo (and Indiana Jones. And Blade Runner. And a goddamn American president). Funnily enough, it’s also been a lifelong dream for many of your favourite bands, including A Day To Remember – who got to live out said dream a couple weeks ago at an airport lounge in Los Angeles. Guitarist Kevin Skaff, arguably the band’s biggest Star Wars fan, fills us in on what it’s like to meet Harrison Ford in the flesh.
“We were in the Qantas First Class Lounge in LA, and we’re just sitting there having a few beers, and this guy’s getting escorted in by one of the Qantas people, and I kinda look at him, and I’m like, ‘Is that… Is that?’ ‘cos when you think about these people, you don’t think you’re ever gonna see them in real life – you don’t think that they’re actually real people. But I saw him and I didn’t believe it was him, and I just looked at Jeremy [McKinnon] ‘cos no one else was really paying attention, and I was like, ‘Dude, I think that’s fucking Harrison Ford’ and his eyes just got really big, and I was like, ‘Dude, I think that’s fucking Harrison Ford!’ and he was like, ‘Well we have to go check’ and so we kind of went over to the area he was in – we were being super creepers – and we looked and we’re like, ‘Oh my fucking god, that’s him!’
From the other side of the room we saw my guitar tech [Johnny Meyer], who’s a super Star Wars nerd, and who was also drunk at this point in time, go in and try and get a picture with him, and we saw him not get the picture and Johnny sat down, and we were like, ‘Oh fuck, dude, Harrison just turned him down… That means we can’t get a picture!’ At that point we were like, ‘Do we get a picture? Is that weird? I don’t wanna be that person, but I don’t think I’m ever gonna see him ever again for the rest of my life so maybe we should just do it’.
So we saw him turn down Johnny, and we were like, ‘Fuck, dude, well that’s that then’ but then about 15 minutes later, Johnny is taking a picture with him. And we were like, ‘Ohh fuck! He’s doing it! Yes!’ and then he starts kind of walking towards us as he’s exiting and I was like, ‘I’m gonna ask him, dude. I have to. Fuck it. Fuck it!’ and I was so scared and I got up, and I was like, ‘Hey man, I don’t wanna be a bother or anything, but could I just get a picture real quick?’ And he did it and he’s like, ‘What’s the name of the band?’ and we’re like, ‘A Day To Remember’ and he’s like, ‘I could’ve sworn you were a basketball team’ [laughs].
And the only reason he didn’t take a picture with Johnny at first was because he was like, ‘You don’t wanna do that because then there’s just gonna be a big commotion’ – which is completely understandable. And then as he got up to leave, he grabbed Johnny’s phone, and gave Johnny’s phone to him and said, ‘Let’s take that picture’. He’s a super rad dude.”
There you have it folks. Dreams really can come true.
